Hi, I'm new to this board so sorry if this question has already been asked... Has anyone heard of HESS recruiters and their rep? Sound legit but I'm new to all this. Initial cost will be aroung R14 000 round $2,300. Is this hectic? I know in Japan most schools will provide you with yr airfare, whats the deal in Taiwan? Well thats all for now, oh yes.. and where is best to be located? Taipei, the country?? ANy suggestions will be appreciated.

Hey Nexbear,

Before someone gets their panties in a wad, let me just give you a link to a recent discussion we had on Hess.

I'd answer your question here, but I'd just be saying the same things, and I'm quite verbose sometimes.

I might also add that it is not necessary to deal with a recruiter for a job at hess. You can go to their website and deal with them directly www.hess.com.tw I think. Avoid recruiters if you can. They are best not trusted. Though I don't currently live there, I'd recommend Taipei to live if you can get posted there. It is the cleanest, most organized, least corrupt city there is on this island. It also has the best amenities for foreign residents. It is, also btw, the most expensive in terms of living costs.

You could also look at www.kojenenglish.com whgo are a similar kind of company, but seem to come up with slightly less criticism than Hess and I believe a slightly higher salary.

Forget about recruiters.

When you apply via the website, they have a recruiter call you. The recruiter works exclusively for Hess. They do your interview and are your initial contact with Hess.

Perhaps 'recruiter' needs to be clarified. Recruiters, as in the posts that feature the sentence 'Don't use recruiters' refers to persons working independently of English schools, who get paid by a school to locate a foreigner for the purpose of filling an English teaching vacancy at said school.

Obviously it would seem here the term recruiter is being used to describe a person inside the company's human resource / personell department. Obviously it would be difficult to avoid these people as they are your point of contact with said company, and if you didn't contact them who the hell would you send the paperwork too!! Rolling Eyes

Actually these people who work as Hess 'recruiters' are actually previous employees of the company that have returned to their respective countries. The term representative may be more apt. Both Hess and the teachers see an advantage in maintaining a professional relationship in regards to them remaining a point of contact for potential teachers. As a result of this they have an @hess.com.tw email address.

You can deal through Hess direct, but there is no reason not to deal with their representative in your country. Sure, Hess would pay the representative a fee for their work, but this would not affect your placement.
