Hi everyone,
I'm curious as to whether Nova actually wants people with TESOL certs or not, I've applied to do one just now, not a CELTA but not one of those online ones, it says its a Cert IV in TESOL and with it I will (at least officially) be qualified enough to teach ESL in Australia.
I'm thinking of applying with Nova next year, mostly because they have offices right here, and I know that everyone thinks they're horrible, but its basically just a year to get experience and some money. Its always possible to transfer to another job after a certain amount of time.
I want to do the TESOL cert so I can start applying for teaching jobs straight away when I get back without more ado - its nothing to do with trying to look better to get into Nova, but would Nova actually mind that I (would by then) have one at all? I've heard others say that they get scared off by people with much in the way of qualifications.
Your thoughts, anyone... |

I have very recent experience of this. I went along to the NOVA interview in London and got chatting to an amazing looking girl who models for FHM and is just generally amazingly cool and beautiful. We got on really well, formed an immediate bond and I was picturing heading out to Japan safe in the knowledge that I have a quite stunningly stunning girl with me.
She had a CELTA, I had nothing. She went into her interview and found the interviewer to be openly hostile, mine was lovely. I got in, she didn't.
Curse you, Nova. Curse you. |

Eikaiwas worry that their employees will start modelling and are using them as a ticket to Japan. I interviewed at Aeon and the guy said four times "You are not allowed to do any modelling during your contract".
So this particular girl was showing up having a clue b/c of CELTA (stike one- big chains want you to teach according to their method and their method alone), ability to do modelling, and experience with a large scale publication so that could lead to modeling-industry contacts worldwide (strike two) and anyone who actually does do modelling for something like FHM has to be very confident about themselves and therefore hard to manipulate (strike three).
I'm not saying that people who work for Nova or any of the big chains are easy o manipulate and act like sheep, but the fact is that these companies are trying to find people who are not likely to rock the boat in any way, and anything that suggests to them that a interviewee may have a very alpha personality when it comes to relations with management, is not going to be thought of highly.
Whether or not the OP should include the TESOL certificate, I don't really know. From the perspective of trying to get the job at Nova, it might be better to say that you were thinking of taking a certificate programme and had talked to professors about it (the Nova people could conceivably think you were going to move to a smaller school with a better overall package soon after arriving). But on the other hand, I wouldn't do that, because to me, it would be like lying, and it's not like there aren't other ways to go to Japan to teach English. |

| In case anyone's wondering, you can do what you want in your free time in Japan. That includes modeling. Hell, I'm signing up with an acting agency next month! |

| But not if you get paid for it because that would be contrary to many people's contracts (including, I believe, Nova's- they don't want you to teach your own private classes because it would cut them out of the financial loop) and you could therefore be fired. |

| Before you get too enthusiastic about that modelling ork, check your visa status. Certainly an instructor visa doesn't authorise modelling, and I would be surprised if a humanities visa allowed it. |

My guess is it would come under the Entertainer visa, which would definitely mean you can not model and teach at the same time, as you are then in violation of your teaching visa.
The only way you can model and teach at the same time is on a spouse or permanent resident visa which allows multiple activities on one visa.
Entertainer visa
(1 year, 6 months, or 3 months)
Activities to engage in theatrical performances, arts, song, dance, musical performances, sports, or any other show business. Applicants must fulfill certain conditions concerning personal history, work status, and form of entertainment.
Activities such as the production of television programs or movies, the photographing of models, etc. Applicants must fulfill certain conditions concerning work status. |
