Hi! I'm just checking that my salary quoted is OK; it's $3000 per month at an international school in Shanghai. It seems to be higher than some TEFL jobs, but is a lower salary than other overseas schools I've taught in. Does anybody know the going rate for salaries at international schools in Shanghai? Thanks! |

Shanghai is one of the most expensive cities in the world . This salary is way below average . 3,000 is Ok if you are out in the boonies but it won't buy you noodles in Shanghai , |

The American School of Guangzhou used to pay a little over U.S. $ 2000; now no doubt a little more.
I know another school with an International section; teachers of sciences get U.S.$ 4000.
TEFLers? Dunno!
And, oh, housing is free. |

That would equate to some 25,000 RMB a month. Considering that, according to the authorities in Beijing, the highest salary for a foreigner in China ever disclosed has been 100,000 RMB a month, I am somewhat skeptical. Are you sure it is not 3,000 RMB a month? Before you say impossible, there are many who work in China for such piddling amounts. |
There are several schools that pay around 25,000RMB a month in Shanghai (the most famous used to be the Wall Street School, though I heard they are in trouble now) but it is still a very high salary for a teaching post.
The maximum figure of 100,000RMB paid to a foreigner must be a very old statistic - where did you read this? There are significant numbers of foreign workers earning those sums and more. JP Morgan, Standard Charter, Chase Manhatten etc etc. 100,000RMB is less than 7,000 pounds a week, or around 80,000 pounds a year. That's a fantastic salary anywhere in the world but is absolutely insignificant in comparison to thousands of workers in New York, Frankfurt, the City of London etc. Some partners at Clifford Chace are making 100,000 a week and living in Shanghai!
Mid-level managers and engineers at VW in Shanghai earn around 100,000 Euros a year, so I am sure there are many people higher up earning a lot more. |

To my horror I saw a couple of Uni's in Beijing offering 2800 and 3200 RMB earlier this year.
I think he means USD in which case it is fine deal. I am sure many are earning less in the Middle East. (Before I am flamed I have seen ads for spots paying less!) |

Thanks everyone! I've had another look at the contract - it's definitely in $US & has the expat package (accomm, flights, medical). I've heard that Shanghai is really expensive re bars, restaurants, shops etc. I guess Dulwich College (is that in Suzou?) and Shanghai British School have some of the highest salaries, because of the expat parents (fees paid through their company?) but I'm just guessing. |

Hola!
Shanghai is not that expensive, compared to Tokyo, NYC, gay Paris or anywhere else of that caliber then Shanghai is cheap.
You're going to make $3,000 USD a month? With housing? Excellent. The housing rental prices are about the same as middle America.
There are the corporate Westerners who are living it up here, but the average salary of local people in Shanghai is only 3000 RMB a month, so this tends to keep the prices down.
Shanghai is a fun place to visit, but I would not want to live there. Your salary could talk me into it however.

Having lived in Shanghai and recenly visited America, I can tell you this is not true. Where exacly in middle-America can you rent your own aparment for 2500 RMB? And that was in Pudong, 10 minutes from the lujiazui financial disrict ( Shanghais Wall street). |

I don't know anything about accommodation in Shanghai, but this web site has been given to me. I will have to choose between a high rise and a low rise when I get there from these options (obviously, depending on what's left!) http://www.metropolis-sh.com/plink/as-Shanghai%20Garden%20Apt.htm. Thanks again for all your help. |

If you are talking about US3000.00 then take the deal, on the other hand if you are talking about RMB3000.00 you are being had!
Then again, there are volunteer teachers, who are working for room n board.... believe it or not!
Shanghai is NOT expensive. Definitely NOT!!!
Beijing I recently found out is more expensive than Shanghai.
I LOVE SHANGHAI!

Can you seriously say that Shanghai is one of the most expensive in the world? For instance, I've heard that 4000 yuan a month will get a good one bedroom flat. The cheapest in London will be around 10,000 yuan a month in an ex-council flat in a crack-ridden estate. |

Exactly - if you could give me a one bedroom apartment in central London for 300 odd quid a month, I'd bite your hand off.
If you advertised such a place it would be gone before the ink had dried on the ad... |
