No matter whatever the recruiter offers, do not accept nor committ to a job before you get here. Tell your recruiter that you are happy to check out any placements they may have when you get here, and ask them to line some interviews up for when you arrive. Don't make any promises to the recruiter as you don't need to.

If the recruiter can find you the best position then of course you will sign up. If they can't, and you can find a better deal elsewhere, then the recruiter will need to accept this.

If they can't then you know that you made the right decision not to deal with them.

What is the name of the recruiter/s that you have been dealing with? We might have some advice here.

i also want to know something about telephone interview so i can prepare for it, being sorely lacking in experience. what about some of the bigger companies like Hess? the interviews should be pretty extensive? my worst fear is that they're gonna made me go thru a grammar exam...oh the anxiety is killing me!!!!!!!

Asia Recruiters (AKA Taitekton) seem to be okay as recruiters go, however I do have some questions about the positions they are offering.

They suggest that they have 500 odd positions available. I doubt that all of these are within private buxibans, which leaves elementary and junior high schools, and private kindergartens. If working here legally is important to you then be very wary of positions in any institution other than the private buxibans. In many cases, those other institutions do not qualify for providing work permits and an ARC, and therefore you will be working illegally. Just because a school promises or even offers you an ARC, doesn't mean you are working there legally. The name of the employer on your ARC needs to be the same as the name of the employer that you are actually working at.

As I said in my earlier post, if you feel better arriving with some arrangements made then feel free to go through a recruiter and have them line up so interviews for you when you arrive. Don't accept their offer of airport pickup nor free acccomodation when you arrive as this obligates you. Just catch a bus from the airport to Taipei, oir wherever you are going, and book into a cheap hostel of hotel for under NTD2,000 a night. Spend a couple of days looking for work and then move into more permanent accomodation).

The telephone interview is generally nothing to be worried about. It is really just an opportunity for the employer to ensure that you are indeed a native speaker of English, and that you don't have any speech impediments, nor any other pronunciation problems. It is also a good chance for the employer to gauge your personality as far as are you bubbly or quite, serious or zany. The best thing that you can do is just relax, speak clearly, and be nice. It is also a good chance for you to ask some questions, so prepare something on this end to.

wow wombat, thank you so much for your help and information. as to your post earlier, i do have a taiwanese passport so therefore i think i am qualified to teach in public schools legally. i guess i was just being totally paranoid with the interview since i've only had face to face ones before.

Hey Pinpin...keep us posted on the experience with this "recruiting" company. It would be interesting to find out exactly what they are offering. Go into it with your eyes wide-open and your feet planted firmly on the ground. Ask mucho questions.

Best to keep in mind that most schools hire recruiters because they cannot find anyone themself. I work at a reputable school and it took my boss weeks to find someone, yet she never even considered using a recruiter.

Maybe that should tell you something? But hey, I wish you the best and hopefully you will find a diamond in the rough. A good sign at any school is at least two or three other native speakers who are more or less happy and have renewed their contracts at least once.

Cheers Cool

as far as Asia Recruiters goes, i got a phone call today offering a job in Xin Zhu with 45000 at a kindergarden. this is my first offer and i have a hess phone interview waiting for me in a couple of days. what do ppl think i should do?
the recruiter wants me in taiwan asap and while i have no experience overseas, i'm getting pretty freaked and exited at the same time. I got some advise from ppl saying i shouldn't agree to anything until i'm in taiwan. i guess if worst come to worst, i can always check the place and the contract out first and if i don't like it, i can always choose not to sign it as the recruiters can't hold me on anything yet.

Depending upon how many hours you are expected to teach, this could be quite low. Most kindergartens would require teachers to be at the school from about 8:30 to 4:30, with a total of about four hours of actual teaching time (the rest is break and play times for the kids). Assuming a five day week, that is a total teaching workload of 20 hours a week. Divide your monthly wage of NTD45,000 by 80 and you get NTD562 per hour, which is quite respectable for a newcomer. If I am correct with the hour requirement above however, the fact that you need to be at the school all day precludes you from having another source of income from 8:30 to 4:30. Therefore we should really divide your monthly wage by the number of hours that you are actually at the school. So we end up with NTD45,000 divided by 160 and you get NTD281 per hour. This is obviously not what you want to be paid for your time.

This is the sort of thing that you need to check on to make sure that you are securing a good job. For a full time job you should be looking in the order of NTD55,000-65,000 per month.

The second concern with the kindergarten work is legality. The fact that you are arriving on your Taiwan passport and Taiwan ID should cover this base in your case.

Just ignore this pressure. The recruiter gets paid as soon as you sign, so any pressure that they may exert on you for an earlier arrival is most likely driven by their need to collect the cash. A bird in the hand is better than two birds in the bush.

Thats the idea. Contact recruiters for leads but dont commit until you have had a chance to check things out on the ground. If everything is as the recruiter has claimed then of course you will sign through them. If the recruiter is being less than honest then your request will most likely draw their bluff and they will cease making contact with you as you arent the easy target they thought you were.

One final comment about recruiters. Ask them how they get paid. If they receive a one off introductory fee then that is reasonable. If they collect your pay from the school to pay to you, or collect a monthly fee from your wage then please dont sign through that kind of recruiter. Those types of fees are unreasonable and we need to stamp this practice out.
