| wondering if anyone could help me. been TESOL for about 4 yrs at the moment, am a quailified primary/intermediate teacher but got sidetracked into second language teaching. just completed a graduate diploma in language teaching and enjoyed it so much am now contemplating in doing a masters. the university of Auckland offers two masters, one is masters of professional studies and the other is a master of arts in language teaching. should i be bothered that one is an ma and one is just a masters. would eventually like to get a job in a university in Japan. if anyone could help i would be really grateful. |

I am teaching at a Japanese university and could best advise you on what they are looking for. As well as a Masters degree (most preferred are degrees in English, TESOL, Applied Linguistics or a related degree) you will need teaching experience in Japan, 3 referreed publications needed for full time jobs. Nowadays a PhD is increasingly desirable. A TESOL diploma will not make much difference to your job application and they will look more at the Masters. the diploma will give you some job / teaching skills but many also ask for Japan-related experience e.g. working part time at a university if you are looking for full time jobs.
Some jobs here are advertised in English but they attract a lot of applications. Some knowledge of Japanese is recommended as many job postings are advertised in Japanese and choices open up to you.
