Yes, a truly 'first world' university (your words, not mine)--without holding a Ph.D. How we admire you!

Why live in and fuel the economy of the PRC? I suppose you agree with all the political decisions, military adventures and human-rights policies made there?
Do you hold your nose when you accept your 'First World' salary cheques? Or when you travel to those grim mainland universities to discuss insects? |

Nope, Luddy.
You're still refusing to address the many contradictions in your postings. If you hold others to standards of consistency and correctness, why be so defensive and cowardly when we point out your own lack of consistency and correctness?
I asked you about your "would never set foot in" quote some time ago. You refused then; you refuse now.
And in which parallel universe is Hong Kong SAR in the 'First World'??
Trapped you again, eh? You simply hate being shown to be the pompous windbag you truly are on these forums. And you hate me for being the one who punctures your wildly inflated self-image. |

Luddy,
Ad hominem attack never takes the place of specific answers to specific questions.
Trash me all you like. Unlike others here, I can take it. Coming from you, it's a bit of an honour. It means that I've evidently touched a very sensitive Luddite nerve.
[You've just edited another one of your posts (Garden Path) after I pointed out an error. I generously say, "You're welcome!"] |

Luddy, I'm always happy to indulge somebody who has posted 117 messages here in only nine days!! Your provide all the fodder anyone could possibly want.
I'll follow you anywhere, dear Lubbock -- except to Texas, where your namesake city is known to be just like the 'grim mainland' you claim to despise.
There's a 'uni' in Lubbock, however, where you can lecture on insect squeaks to your heart's content. It's quiet, so you can finally find the time to finish that doctorate [sic] thesis without the petty distraction of lesser mortals. |

I find it sad that three of the most experienced, intelligent and educated posters on this board just cant get on. I hate to say it, but maybe this is an indicator that long term teachers in Asia either develop or already had some anti-social tendancies. We have men with the education of diplomats fighting and bickering like teenage girls.
Roger, surely its more important to argue against Jeddah Teacher than attack AT? |

2 over lee,
Let's not forget that dear Roger has never told us what his education actually is. He demanded my 'credentials' but then wouldn't divulge his own. |

An end to the search
Redding woman's war-torn family connects through Red Cross service
Michelle Teasley
NEVER FORGET: Jadwiga Reinke, 54, of Redding holds a photo of her late mother, Natalia Semionovna Morosowa. Natalia was 19 when she, her parents and two sisters were captured by Nazis during World War II and put in a concentration camp. Reinke recently located her mother's family in Latvia with the help of an American Red Cross program.
It was, she said, the early 1940s and Adolf Hitler was leading the "ethnic cleansing" of the Jewish[sic] in Nazi Germany.
....
While imprisoned, Natalia and her family faced a firing squad three times.
.....
Natalia and her family were freed from the concentration camp when Allied troops began liberating survivors around 1945.
.....
Natalia's sisters and parents, meanwhile, were sent back to Russia. She never saw them again. |

Listen, AA,
"we" don't need to divulge details that my employer knows, do we?
I assure the more sober folks in this forum that my educational background is second to none than my own and to others who are not posting here; i.e. AA's is not more perfect than mine.
I wouldn't stoop so low as to talk back to this character if he hadn't started stealthily attacking people in other threads, including myself. He has disqualified himself as one I wish to discuss occupationjal issues because he has shown no professional delicacy in speaking to me before.
Look, AA, you have your education, and I suspect it's an American one in which case it's second to mine as I am convinced Americans have a long way to go before they can lecture others on how to acquire a second tongue - it's not what your fellow countrypeople excel at.
We pushed you out of the China foru, and I say, good riddance! You displayed your most arrogant self when talking to people who are labouring under conditions that you don't seem to understand.
I don't know why anybody should deal with Jeddah Teacher anyway; if AA does it shows what he is good at:
it's not discussing things.
It simply is lambasting, bad-mouthing and slandering others.
What else is AA capable of? I haven't seen anything good from that churl yet!
Oh those threads he hastened to point out to me... a bit defensive, wasn't he? |

| Not that age really indicates wisdom, but it does sound like many of you are younger than you ought to be...and not in the sense B. Dylan was talking about. |

That would be difficult. Perfection is an absolute quality. |

Roger, you can let defensiveness and insecurity (and marital problems) colour your view of others. Or you can address questions and arguments directly. If you knew that you'd never be satisfied with my 'credentials', why did you demand them several times?
Lubbock... What shall we do with you? You think you're living and working in both the First World and in Southeast Asia -- oops! How is that possible? But you're still labouring in increasingly grim HK SAR China (which along with Japan and Korea is in East Asia, last time I checked, but is most definitely not 'First World'). Your delusions of grandeur and inflated self-image are a source of continual amusement on these forums. You even try to inflate the image of the country in which you live!!
If you think your doctorate [sic] thesis would be acceptable to the linguistics faculty ranked second only to MIT in the States, please submit it forthwith when it's finally complete. |

Well, Lubbock, the record has been preserved and is easily verifiable in the thread Lead up the Garden Path.

That gives the irate Lubbock 13 minutes in which to fret about making yet another error in syntax. Then he decides to fix it.

| 'First World' is generally considered an economic term; most people would certainly consider Japan and Hong Kong as first world countries.I suspect that South Korea would also now be considered part of the club. |

The last time I checked, Hong Kong was not a country. It was an SAR of China.
And yes, Japan has traditionally been classified among First World nations. Technically, the term First World was coined in opposition to the former Soviet Union and its satellites (which were the Second World). Such distinctions are now, of course, quite moot.
If the Luddite wants to continue using an outmoded term to denote the undemocratic nation in which he lives and works, he is welcome to do so.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World#First_World.2C_Second_World.2C_Third_World
"In the context of the Cold War:
First World refers to nations that were within the United States' sphere of influence e.g., the NATO countries of North America and Western Europe, Japan, and some of the former British colonies such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa [hmmm, not Hong Kong].
Second World refers to nations within the Soviet Union's sphere of influence, e.g. Warsaw Pact countries. Besides the Soviet Union proper, most of Eastern Europe was run by satellite governments working closely with Moscow. This term may or may not also refer to Communist countries whose leadership were at odds with Moscow, e.g. China and Yugoslavia.
Third World refers to nations within neither sphere of influence, who were often members of the Non-Aligned Movement. They were mostly developing countries, and many of them are located in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. They are often nations that were colonized by another nation in the past. After World War II, the First and Second Worlds struggled to expand their respective spheres of influence to the Third World. The militaries and intelligence services of the United States and the Soviet Union worked both secretly and overtly to influence Third World governments, with mixed success...." |
