So I've been to and from Chile about twice now and each time I end up paying a ridiculous amount in airfair. I know that's kind of standard for South America but I was wondering if anyone was able to find relatively cheap airfair and how they went about doing it?
The cheapest I've ever paid was around $1,000 USD for round trip tickets which, I've been told, is pretty reasonable... but I don't know. What do you think? |

hi weona,
i found a great deal last fall on airlineconsolidator.com, at 700 usd and w/o restrictions. i've also heard that allcheapfares.com offers similar prices. found them with a lot of diligence and patience. good luck,

STA travel (formerly council travel) has got some cheaper fares, for about 700 US, less if you dont mind trying a one-way, which my friend just did, and nobody blinked.
I got a fare for about $650 from DC to Stgo. on Priceline.com. You have to bid for the prices, and they come back with an offer. You have to be a little flexible about when in the day you fly, but I found it good. Ive also gotten really cheap tix to other places on Hotfares.com. But this this time, priceline gave a better offer. I think I flew American, but I dont remember.
If youre flexible about days and times, you should do okay with flights from the major east coast cities. To the west coast or non-big cities prolly cost quite a bit more.

Ah, well that explains a lot. It has a lot to do with location in the U.S. as I am from Washington state. I don't think its possible to get much further from Stgo than this. Damn.
STA Travel is over $1,000 but I will try the other options you mentioned. Thank you! |

never deal witht he airline directly on international flights as you will always pay the most, check out a consolidator....check out your Sunday newspaper travel section and call up those palces listed, even if they dont list tickets for Santiago and see if you can scare up a cheap ticket. |

There are time when getting to Mexico City or Houston or Miami, then leaving for Southern South America, saves a huge a bit over trying to go "right there" on one airline, or in going in a single day. Depends on the time of year, and your schedule, and your passport, etc. Last month (or was it August?) there were at least 3 airlines offering Mexico City or Miami = Lima (under $385) & Santiago (under $555). If all else fails, you could try Intratours (www.intratours.com ?), as they used to have someone who really knew everything about getting from Latin America to South America, or the other way around -- and they also offer weekly and monthly specials, which can be nice if you have the ability to leave on short of fairly short notice. You are right though, WA, that is the price killer on almost any trip down here... |
