Hola!

As a fan of Star Trek, I would like to know who is the Kirk of the ESL universe. Who here has been everywhere and anywhere in the world teaching English. How many continents have you been?

I have only been in China, Taiwan, and Korea. China and Korea the same, Korea (Klingon Empire) a little different. Who here has been to Asia, Europe, ME and South America? Tell some war stories. If you do, I will from my pitiful trips in the star system.

Lt. SENOR Twisted Evil

Star Trek, eh.

I'm afraid that in the EFL/ST comparisns, I'd be one of those guys in the red shirts.

Japan - The Borg. The Collective seeks to assimilate you. Resistance is futue. Eigo muzukashi ne.

China - Cardassia. EVERYONE is a politican. Outcome of trials decided beforehand. Guanxi.

I do not WANT to be Kirk...but I have been (and taught on the four continents you mention:Asia(Korea),Europe(Poland,Czech, and Lithuania),Middle East(YES,I KNOW,already,it is not really a continent)..in the ME in Saudi and Kuwait, and in South America(Venezuela) and in North America(US)YES,I know ...BIG DEAL...a lot of people have taught in the US. Smile

I really have no war stories today.I have been a few places...taught in the ones mentioned above.I know,,,there are people out there who have much more experience than mine. And if you really want to find someone who has been in a lot of countries...usually navy personnel(from various countries)...although they are not TESOL teachers, obviously.

I think the N. Koreans could be the Klingons actually, especially since they have their "cloaking device".It seems that no one knows what is going on in that country.

Dear Shonai Ben,
Haven't you got your ETs mixed up? I thought it was the Romulans who had the " cloaking device ", not the Klingons.
Regards,
John

No,the Klingons had the cloaking device. The Romulans had ale.I think the Klingons were the number one enemy of the Federation. The Romulans were not mentioned that much.

Dear Shonai Ben,
When in doubt, check the Net:

http://www.strategyplanet.com/starmada/armada1/romulanships.shtml

and

According to Star Trek ethos, it is the Klingons and Romulans who use cloaking devices, whilst the Federation don’t, which seemed very silly. TNG fixed this anomaly by "creating" the Treaty of Algeron, in which the Federation relinquished the right to develop or use such cloaking devices.

Guess we're both right.
Regards,
John

Actually,if my memory serves me correctly,in the original episode where a ship had a cloaking device,it was a Romulan ship. But the proceeding episodes only showed the Klingons with the cloaking device.I am not 100% sure about this because it was a long time ago.Anyway, suffice to say,I guess we are both right. Thanks for the info.

Dear Shonai Ben,
Well, a sneaky, clever, crafty technique such as " cloaking " has always seemed to me much more suited to the " Romulan ethos " than to the Klingon, in your face, up front, " we don' need no stinkin' cloakin' device " warrior mentality. I mean, would a Klingon creep up on you? Heck no - he'd consider that " sissy stuff ". Klingons are much more " direct frontal assault " types, I'd say.
Regards,
John

Good point John.I actually liked the Klingons just for that reason. They were warriors, not diplomats. They were supposed to be the bad guys but I never really thought of them as such. The cloaking device suits the Romulans much better.
Funny the Federation never used the cloaking device.

Japan..The Borg, defimitely great.
Romulans and Klingons both had cloaking. Kirk steals it from the Romulans in one show. In another there is a great battle betwwen a Romulan ship and Kirk's ship.

Definitely go with S Korea as the Klingons though. The Romulans are kind of related to the Vulcans, and have a lot of true philosophy and intellect, but are ruled by a fierce secret police.

N Korea as Cardassia? Where torture is a way of life, and everone is either secret police or in jail. I don't think N Korea is brave enough to be Klingons, who fight for the love of fighting. N. Korea kills and tortures..why?

Who did Cardassia conquer...Bjorin people? Who have had so much civil strife no one knows what to have faith in anymore? Reminds me a bit of China

China does have decent beer..

Wait...China is the federation. You know that in the federation there is no longer poverty, no one fights over petty things, they have advanced past that...just like China, which has been civilized for 5,000 years, and as CCTV9 tells us..there are no longer any problems, or if there are the leaders have it well in control. Both preach happy happy time. You think???
