I am leaving for Japan June 25th to teach w/ NOVA. It cost 60,000 yen per month for basic health insurance. STA Travel offers health insurance for $380usd for 6 months which includes luggage insurance and then it's $50/month if I decide to extend it. Does anyone know of other good plans? What about dental insurance?
THANKS! My email [email protected]

60,000 yen per month?!!! Ripoff! What is the name of such a high priced outfit?

Japanese National Health Insurance costs 2,500 yen/month in your first year, and you only pay 10 months for 12 months coverage. After that, it goes up, but to 20,000-40,000 yen/month (depending on your location, previous salary, and other personal circumstances). Once you're on NHI, you will find it is difficult to get out of it, but you can see it is extremely cheap the first year. You have to pay 30% of all bills on NHI, including prescriptions.

If you prefer overseas health insurance plans, there are a handful listed at the following web site. I know nothing about them, so this is not a statement of support.

I have a policy with Global Healthcare Ltd. They have a basic plan and an Ultracare plan. Ultracare offers a few months of unemployment coverage, will cover a trip home if you're seriously hurt and want to be treated in your own country, will pay for repatriation of remains, and other benefits that are ideal for foreigners. I can't find their URL, but you'll see their ad the English-language newspapers in Japan and in Metropolis magazine.

Glenski,

2500 yen a month the first year seems fine, but after that it seems really expensive. Is that how much Japanese pay? What do you do? I plan to stay for a couple of years, and would want coverage, but that will take a serious chunck out of my monthly income. Confused

Yes, they do. That price is not just for foreigners. I pay it, but my wife and I try to negotiate with city hall to get me the lowest possible payments. When I went from a FT language school job to a PT one (plus privates that accounted for 50% of my wages), we told city hall that my income had dropped to the PT wage, and they dropped the insurance payments accordingly.

No to NOVA insurance!!!!

I was just checking the bumph they (NOVA) gave me and I see that even their expensive PLUS policy only covers you for a paltry 3.5 million yen. Thats about 15000GBP or 20000USD. In comparison the least amont of cover i have seen on on a UK policy is 2 million pounds.

I would hesitate to go to any country with such a small amount of health cover, let alone Japan, avoid.
