I've been interested in working in Northern Europe, but realize the difficulties of finding jobs up there. I'm an American who will have a BFA in Creative Writing and English in May and I've looked into the American-Scandinavian foundation which arranges teaching assistantships in Finland for Americans 21 and over. Has anyone had any experience with them or known someone who has? The website says they pay between $800-$1000 USD a month, and rent ranges from $250-$300 a month. I've asked around and heard this is barely enough to live on there (depending of course on where in Finland you're placed). I've also heard about possibly suplementing my income with part time work in a pub or something like that, but speaking no Finnish, wouldn't that be nearly impossible?
Basically, I would just really like to have an experience in Northern Europe that would pay me enough to live on (and maybe pay about $60 a month on some school loans?)
Any info would be great.
Thanks,
Pila |

I checked out that offer at their website, and it seems very vague on some important points, Pila.
They do not, for example, tell you, whether the $800 - $1000 salary is net or gross. Nor do they say why some get $800 and others $1000 - I mean, it might just be a difference in the number of hours worked; but if it isn't, you will need to know how to get into the higher bracket.
Btw, would indeed be hard to live from that kind of income, wherever you are in Finland.
The other really unclear point is what they mean by "housing" if the rent is only $250 - $300 per month. This is so low that to me it looks like a room in a student hostel, or shared accommodation, so I would definitely enquire about that too.

Indeed it would, because you need to understand what the customers are ordering. However, it might be possible to get part time teaching work at the local Community College, if this doesn't violate the competition clause in your contract.

I wish you very good luck!
