Thanks! That was awesome info, Senor! All of that helps a lot. Does the fact that you are in China mean that you really prefer being there over Korea or Taiwan? I have 2 offers from Korea as well, so I am curious to get your feedback on that! Thanks again. Cancunense |

Still can't recommend AES, who will indeed hire anyone- sometimes twice, even if you stink up the joint.
But I can definitely second the recommendation of Dalian. A wonderful town. The standout jewel of the Northeast. Great food, pretty girls, as good a climate as DongBei can offer. Pretty, clean (well, clean for a Chinese city, anyway ) and easy to live in. The seaside location gives it cleaner air and great recreation opportunities. I dearly love where I am now, but would happily consider a return to Dalian if anyone ever opens a good school there.

Best answer: neither of the above.
There are a zillion schools and a zillion jobs here, especially in the wake of the SARS madness. Some of them are pretty awful and some of them are great. Shop around. In addition to Dave's try some of the locally-based websites such as www.thatsbeijing.com or www.thatsshanghai.com. They list a lot of jobs not seen anywhere else and some are pretty attractive. Despite their local base they also list jobs elsewhere in China.

the new urls for these two sites are www.thatsbj.com and www.thatssh.com (also www.thatsgz.com for guangzhou) |

There is a lot more information above than needed for the sticky of Cancunense. Since we are considered to be experts and educators in China, we should be much more professional than we are in "AES or English First". First of all the 12,000 RMB for AES Summer jobs is ALL INCLUSIVE and I have read the add on tefl. Have the people who have posted their amazing discoveries read the AES job advert carefully enough? Further more the 12,000 RMB there is for 30 teaching hours per week. Ohh mind you .... it is not full 12,000, but 11,200. The EF offers 4,000 RMB per month, PLUS the flight reimbursement as well as accomodation and health insurance. Wouldn't that be more than the AES offer is??? Ohh ..... EF teaching hours do not exceed the AES once. So respectfully I would suggest that you first do some closer investigation, before you start writing to respond to some stickies. Your wrong information could come at high costs of some others (Cancunese in this case could get a wrong impression). We want to help each other with this fabulous website, not to hurt each other, don't we? Now, why would Bertrand come out to write such sladnerous remarks that might not have much to do with the sticky of Cancunese on the beginning? The EF English First AOM in China is as good as he can be and does what he has to do to keep the EF franchise running in China. Whether he's got his BA, MA or whatever has nothing to do with the sticky above. By the way I know him, I have met him and I think that he works hard enough. With regards to your remarks about the former DOS of EF Huizhou (it is me) you are a way out of line and you have no idea how much you have hurt me. To end my point here, we (foreign academic staff members in China) should all stick together and help each other more than put each other down. We are in a highly traditional country with greatly different approach to the business as well as to education. So, we should interact or use internet resources professionally and with a degree of responsibility. I hope that Bertrand will contact me and further discuss his issues with me. I will be happy to do that.
Now, thank you all for your time reading my contrubution here.
Cheers! |

Hi Cancunese
If you want to save more money, going to Korea will be your better choice. If you want to experience a rich culture, going to China will be your better choice. If your plan is to just travel and come back home in a few, any country might serve you well. Choosing EF or AES might not make a great difference, even though EF English First has many schools in China as well as in the World (that experience could help you in future, if you wish to further teach and travel). I hope that I have been of some help to you. Cheers! |
