What exactly are the differences between "Pass", "Pass B" and "Pass A" on the CELTA?
Thanks,

Hi Daniel,
If you go to Dave's Teacher Training Forum, you'll probably find a number of postings from, and to, a Jeff Mohammad. Jeff is a US-based CELTA instructor. Almost everyday, he gets queries - and criticisms ! - about CELTA. As he could well be regarded as Dave's ESL Cafe's resident CELTA expert, why don't you go to the Teacher Training Forum and post him your query ?
I did my CELTA training, in Melbourne, over three years ago. I only managed to get a Pass. I could be wrong, but I don't think that too many people ever get an 'A' or 'B' Pass. Anyway, make sure that you are prepared before commencing your course. Get hold of a good book on English grammar, as well as something on ESL teaching/learning ( Jeremy Harmer (sp?) and Jim Scrivenor are two authors in the field that come to mind ). Your training centre should also be able to recommend some suitable books.
Good luck.
Peter

On the back of a CELTA this is enmerated. I've paraphrased below:
Pass -- Individual will need some assistance in order to teach English adequately.
Pass B -- Individual will need a little assistance in order to teach English adequately.
Pass A -- Individual will not need assistance in order to teach English adequately.
In practice, very very few people get a Pass A who haven't already taught EFL for at least a year. It's actually a fairly meritorious achievement. |
