Believe it or not, a US psychiatric hospital has been advertising to find staff who are fluent in the Klingon language , as some of their 'guests' will only speak in the language of the Kronos homeworld...
Anyone else see this story online?

Yep, I saw the story, perhaps a week or two ago. Having done some mental health work, I find myself torn. On one hand, it's usually not a good idea to encourage delusions. On the other hand, sometimes delusions get so fixed that they're really difficult to cope with. If challenging the delusion interferes with critical tasks (taking meds, personal hygiene, eating enough, etc), maybe it's better to play along so that the client gets good care. You can always return to the delusion later when the client is a little better and (hopefully) more willing to listen.
Besides, this gives the really hard-core Trekkies a chance to show their parents that all those hours glued to the TV set and computer haven't been totally wasted. |

Dear Irish,
" Besides, this gives the really hard-core Trekkies a chance to show their parents that all those hours glued to the TV set and computer haven't been totally wasted. "
Not only that, but when the Klingons finally conquer the Federation, those hard-cores will be able to get jobs as interpreters/translators or KSL ( Klingon as a Second Language ) teachers ( non-native speakers, of course ).
Regards,
John

Hmm...perhaps those mental patients aren't really mental...maybe they're actually Klingon spies trying to get messages to their handlers! The US gummint only wants us to think that these guys are nuts so we don't panic. Well, I say we panic now! Grab some ammo, put on your aluminum foil hats, and head for the hills! The Klingons are coming! |

Dear Irish,
Some might object to my saying that the Klingons are out to conquer the Federation - " But they're our ALLIES, now, ", they'll protest. Sure they are - just like, say, the French, only even more untrustworthy. I mean, does anyone REALLY believe that Worf LIKES taking orders from a sissy like Jean-Luc? To such naive innocents, all I can say is - : peDoghQo'
Regards,
John

MajQa' as usual, John! Truly, we need to encourage our youth to watch more Star Trek so that they're fully versed in the enemy's language. |

Dear Irish,
Didn't you love the translation of " nuqneH "?
" Hello. (Roughly, 'What do you want?')"
" Roughly " in more ways than I, I'd say. Sounds like me on a busy day here when some poor student knocks on my office door. When they broadcast " Star Trek " in, say, Japan, do you dub it, I wonder. What a hoot it'd be to hear Jean-Luc speaking Japanese, almost as good as the one time I saw John Wayne doing so ( in a dubbed movie ).
Regards,
John |

Yes, indeed, the "What do you want?" greeting really spoke to me. I've had it used on me by more than one instructor. God help me, I'll probably be using it myself someday--hopefully not too often.
My favorite bit of Klingon is, "Hab SoSlI' Quch!" ("Your mother has a smooth forehead!") Ouch--them's fightin' words! No doubt Picard's incredibly smooth dome was a daily affront to Whorf's delicate sensibilities.
(John Wayne in Japanese. The mind boggles. What fun that must've been.) |

Dear Irish,
I'm amazed that you were able to post " "Hab SoSlI' Quch!" without being barred from Dave's forever. Can we deduce from this that the moderators are not, in fact, Klingons? John Wayne spouting Japanese was a major hoot. Another odd movie experience - I was watching this B film in an Indonesian theater one time, surrounded by dozens of the locals. It featured big, courageous Yanks gleefully polishing off hundreds of puny, cowardly brown-skinned guys. The weird part was the audience was wildly cheering on the Yanks. Go figure.

John |

anyone here fluent in Klingon?
I know "Kaplah", which I think means "victory".
It was my toast at my brothers wedding..
Never call a person "Patachhh", as that is akin to calling them a piece of s***t
And if you wish to use a Romulan curse, call someone a 'varool', and rest assured, they'll never invite you back...
A chum insists hes partially fluent in Vulcan...I know a few words of Vulcan, but not enough to carry conversation...
Anyone know a good Klingon pickup line for the next time I see a hot Japanese lass at the pub?
I suppose I could just go up to women and excalim "KAPLAH!!!!"
But i need to know a bit more Klingon...
I know a bit about the Klingon mating rituals, but need more research..
thanks

Dear TitanicWreck,
Regarding Klingon mating rituals, you might want to check out the tigers at the local zoo, during the appropriate season, of course.
