Got a credit card? Got parents? Got a couple of friends back home with a few bucks? You'll get out one way or another.

I have seen documentaries where poor people from Bangladesh go to Malaysia or somewhere to find work and are heavily in debt before they even arrive. They end up working menial jobs and contine to incur debt and end up essentially trapped with no hope of ever saving up for transport back home. But their situation is very different. You can always go back to the States and pay off the cost of a plane ticket in a week or two.

Yes, it does happen. But not in the way you imagine. People work for $600 - 700/month scrape by month after month. They're never completely broke. They just don't have much.

Your visa does run out, but as long as you've got a legitimate job you can extend it or leave the country and get a new one.

The solution is simple. Go to another nearby country: Vietnam, China, Korea using whatever means required.

Actually people do get held in the Immigration Detention Center until they can arrange the means to leave. But that is usually a case of deportation for visa overstay or violation/request from home country. Again they won't deport you just because you only have 200 baht in your account the day before payday.

My son and I had get a repatriation loan from the US Embassy back to the US. I worked steady in Thailand for 3 1/2 years and could never get enough together, we arrived in the US with just pocket change.

Schools like Smart and Smile in Nakhon Sawan, read the old postings, aere to blame. They pay low salaries. Noone should be in Thailand unless they have 50,000 baht in the bank that they dont need to touch to buy a ticket home and have money in their pocket when they arrive. If you cant have that much money back then you either need to get out ASAP or dont even come.

Oh yeah and about reaptriation loans, they are not eager to give them out and there are conditions. It takes about 3 to 4 weeks to approve one and be back in the states. I had a special emergency with my 2 1/2 year old son and the best they could imagine was 22 days.
