Roger -

The best news is that I/we are getting what I/we consider to be some really important and helpfull direct assistance from Dr. Stephen Krashen, the man himself.

Three emails a day filled with special advice for our circumstances. A box full of free books and materials posted by him at no small expense.

His involvement has made this a most enjoyable task.

My school has approved 20,000 rmb for me to purchase anything English while I am back in Shanghai for summer vacation. We are currently negotiating my contract since it ends mid-semester and they want me to stay. I am requesting a 150,000 research grant to study the ESL acquisition environment in 30 Chinese unis around China. They are offerring 100,000 and I am holding firm at 150,000. I am not going to blink!

There are some good things happening after all.

Job 1 - The Internet.

Job 2 - A local expat rag. Interestingly - both the rag and the school went out of business.

Job 3 (current so this is how I voted) - The Internet.

Johnslat,
Yeah, I think I remember seeing that post. To be sure, the best way of getting jobs in ANY field is to make connections. But in a carreer where your next job is not necessarily in the country where you reside, why not turn to the net? There are jobs out there, and there are good ones posted on the net (if you look.)

I'd say that the net would be a good way to find your first job in Country X (if you're not in that country). Then make connections - that only makes sense.

I was in Northern Thailand doing some volunteer work. Phone rings one day. Buddy from Japan. He said "There is a good job here if you want it." Nine years later I am still at the job.
