There have been some negative posts about Columbia in the past. I have been offered work there. Does anyone know anything about its CURRENT state of affairs (the last posting concerning it was two years ago)?

And how about New York New York?

If I work part-time, will studying at BizHouse (a sattelite of Providence) get me working eligibility for several months at a time?

Have to accept or decline soon, so I'd appreciate any input you all may have.

Many thanks.

There have been numerous complaints lodged against both Columbia English Consulting and Columbia English Kindergarten (Columbia American School) both with valid addresses in Taichung city.
Columbia consulting is now defunt but their recruitment division is still operating in conjunction with IACC.
Columbia English Immersion Kindergarten in Taichung City is run by a very well connected "local business" woman who has an uncanny ability of evading responsibility for illegitimate employment and business practices.
They also recruit most of their teachers through IACC recruitment service in Taichung city. You would be well advised to avoid both of these institutions.
New York Language School also in Taichung city has 7 complaints filed over a 3 year period, only one of which was verified.
On a scale of 1 (poor) to 10 (oust anding) New York Language school rates a conditional 5. Conditional because it is located in Taichung a city many consider to be the organized crime capital of Taiwan and possibly East Asia.

Good luck,
A.

From what I heard Columbia might be worth avoiding.

The New York place has been the subject of a complaint about the owner as far as I am aware, but it was nothing serious and most likely due to a personal disagreement.

Check it all out and if you're happy then go for it.

There are a lot of outfits called Columbia, but I have yet to hear anything but complaints for any of them. I personally worked at a grammar school/kindy called Columbia Amercian School, and I found it infuriating but survivable for the two months of the summer school. I didn't have to stay for a whole year, for which I am grateful.

I am currently studying at BizHouse, so if you enroll I'll be around to answer any questions.

I was hopeful about the quality of BizHouse during my first quarter. My second quarter had very, very bad teaching quality. I was more than a little insulted that the teacher, who had been semi-attentive during the first quarter, seemed to lose all respect for her students during the second. That teacher is not teaching during the December-to-February quarter, but she may be back.

When all is said and done, BizHouse takes your money and your time and gives you the reference you need to get an ARC. It's a business. They are selling you something you need, and they demand a little bit of respect, in the sense that they command all students to show up for classes or face loss of the reference.

In the end, I think the price in money, time, and hassle is worth it, just barely. I don't recommend BizHouse as highly as I once did.
