It's a bit off topic but it came up on another thread. The Middle East is full of hookers as are most of the hotel bars of Eastern Europe. Is it really so bad..to me it's mostly the ugly side of the free market. Not all of them are press ganged into it.Some do it for money, some do it for drugs, some like the sex...thoughts please. |

It's not called the oldest profession for nothing. It's always been around and imo it always will be.Is it morally wrong?I can't really say for sure that it is.Hookers offer a service and there seems to be no end to the constant flow of customers.I am sure some of the customers are "outstanding members of the community".This is a debate that could go on for ever.Should prostitution be made legal? |

I think it should be legalised. Given that it will always be around, legalisation would at least make it safer for the ho's and their Johns.

Hmmm. Similarities between prostitution and ESL teaching.
You don't need a qualification or experience to get into either.
Once in, it's hard to get out.
There are nasty "pimps" aplenty.
You have to "do tricks" for your "clients".
Both careers can be used to finance alcoholism and other addictions.
Neither profession commands a great deal of respect.
There isn't much of a career ladder in either.
There's no decent union representation (actually, I think some prostitutes do get this in certain countries)
There's always plenty more where you came from. |

I think that it was a comment I made on another thread that raised the question.
My concerns regarding prostitution are not based on puritan morality- have sex with whomever or whatever you want.
The problem, especially in South East Asia, is that prostitition is not undertaken as what we might consider a free choice. The "choice" is often motivated by economic desparation, coercion, or downright slavery. The prostitutes are often young girls, who either began as virgins, or were sold as virgins. The sex trade in many of these areas is truly repugnant. These are not high class hookers who have made a calculated choice of profession.
If I were a man, one who did not have some deep psychological problem, exploiting these women would not be my idea of fun sex. If I were a sane man, I would also value my own personal health enough not to have sex with these women. |

Dear isabel,
If I were a sane man, I wouldn't be teaching EFL in Riyadh. But seriously, I agree with all of your post.

Prostitutes and Lawyers
What is the difference?
They both sell a piece of their humanity for the right price.
Which is better?
Probably being a prostitute because they really do make more money. |

Most do it for economic reasons as isabel rightly pointed out. Women go into the profession facing varying degrees of coercion. Some face terrible lives as bonded labour or sex slaves, others enter the profession more freely attracted by the $$$$$. That said I'm sure those women who go into it for the money would happily do something else if it paid similar dollars.
Some prostitutes might like sex, but do you really think they would enjoy having sex with every fat, ugly 50-year-old man that gives them $50. I think not. |

Moral and legal problems aside, my problem with sleeping with even the happiest of hookers would be the risk of starting a pink cauliflower farm on R. jnr. I just can't even begin to imagine how 'service users' put these sort of risks out of mind. |

That's where "rubbers" come in handy, or can I say condoms on this board? |

They're not completely effective against everything, because some viruses, including HPV, also live on the external areas.

You're probably right. Those nasty bugs are out there.
So does that mean the only safe sex is no sex??
I can't believe I said that. |

Was it the Naked Gun that had a scene in which two people go to bed wearing giant, full-body condoms? It's the only way to be sure... |
