Roger" no school forks out 4500 yuan for a one-month visa, not even for a one-year work visa, full stop!

Well to tell you the truth I was in the local Xingtai police station when it was paid I was there when my I got my L-visa change over to a Z-visa for one month in April then again it was change over in May but no money was paid as far as I know! then it was change over again in June and then in July and in Aug I did ask why so many Z-visas, I said you only need one Z-visa for the year but I was told by this University they do it this way so I don't leave the University within one month of been here, I was told they use to give the full one year Z-visa to the American teachers who came here but they just left without saying a word so now they stop it, and do it this way. Very Happy

I also arrived on an L visa and received my Z visa, in country. There were no "extra payments" involved, just the visa issuance fees; but posters have reported having trouble getting this done in Beijing, for some reason.

Chinese Law appears to sanction the L to Z "switch". See http://www.chinatoday.com/law/labor.htm

"Foreigners who have not been issued residence certificate (i.e. holders of F, L, C or G type visas), and those who are under study or interim programs in China and the families of holders of Employment Visas shall not work in China. In special cases, employment may be allowed when the foreigner changes his status at the public security organs with the Employment License secured by his employer in accordance with the clearance procedures, under these Rules foreigners changes his status at the public security organs with the Employment License and receives his Employment Permit and residence certificate."

Thanks jholland. I appreciate your response.

Since I want to see the school I'll be working at in person, I don't want to commit to an employer before I arrive. That leaves me arriving on a tourist visa and changing it. I'm glad to hear that is possible.

Some potential employers haven't secured the required "Employment License" (permission to hire foreigners). They will not be able to complete any of the formalities for you. Perhaps another poster can suggest a way to find out ahead of time (before you accept employment and make your journey to China) if the employer has qualified in this way.
