Hey guys,
I'm paying a few hundred NT a month for our cable TV and today all of a sudden there was a cable guy and our (non-English speaking) landlord who came peeking inside. The cable guy said that I'm watching cable illegally! He said that if I want to continue watching cable that I will need to pay him $3900NT for 6 months of cable and another $1000NT for him to hook up the cable. Does anyone know what's happening here?
He's going to give me a couple hours and call me back. |

Who are you paying for the cable? The landlord? If so, then your answer is right there. He's been stealing the cable and charging you for it. Tell him to pay the bill. If you have cable in your own name, you should have bills from the company to prove payment. This whole thing sounds fishy to me. |

Illegal cable hookups seem to be part and parcel of rented places in Taiwan. What generally seems to happen is that someone in the building, or possibly even the neighborhood, has a legal connection, and everyone else taps into that either with or without the knowledge of the rightful owner. Individuals who tap into the line get the service for free of course, but there are often problems with picture quality coupled with the obvious moral concerns of doing this.
The question in your case is obviously, if the connection is in fact an illegal hookup (highly likely) then why have you been paying a monthly fee for the free service to your landlord (sounds like a rip-off). Possibly your landlord has been pocketing the money, or if they happen to live in the same building as yourself then maybe you have been covering the cost of their legal service. What the cable guy said to you sounds legit so I dont think that the problem is coming from his end.
If you are interested in getting a legal hookup then I would suggest that you discuss this with your landlord. See if you can get your landlord to cover the connection fee, and you cover the rental. The landlord gets to keep the connection after you move out, so this seems fair. Then you could really try your luck and see if you could get credit from your landlord for the money you have been paying him/her for the free illegal connection, which would cut down your costs for the service. Of course all of this depends upon a lot of things, but it is a suggestion that I hope may help. |
