Hi, I will be visiting Japan over the New Year catching up with friends etc and would like to visit a traditional onsen or better still a Ryokan with a private onsen. Any suggestions? I will be based in Osaka so something within 2-3 hrs from there would be ideal. Honshu or Shikoku are OK. |

Try Arima onsen in Kobe. It is the closest and one of the most famous in Japan. I went there last New Years. I stayed at a friends house, but still walked to the onsen from there. It was nice. A word of warning: it was packed. You might not find a place that still has rooms. |

Buy (or borrow) a guide book (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide) and read; either will have far more information than you will get here from a few anecdotes. |
