Hi. I'm a student at the University of Iowa, working on my MA in Linguistics, and I will have taught ESL at my University for one year when I graduate. Directly after that I will be in search of short term work in north western Mexico (one semester, b/c my husband will still be a student and there is a study abroad program that will give him a full ride there), then hopefully Washington D.C. for a year(b/c my husband will be appying for a fellowship to work there), then Madrid for an undetermined period of time(b/c Spain is my dream and my husband's adviser said he should be able to find work in Madrid) . I will not have any EFL certificate, but would consider an online course if anyone thought it would be beneficial. Also, I would only want to work part-time because I have children. Am I asking too much? Will I have enough education and experience? Are jobs easy to get, good, and well-paying in these areas? Are part-time jobs hard to find? Would I be better off trying to be a private toutor? Sorry such a long post !! |

As for your short stint in Mexico, yes, you have enough education and experience to find a job teaching EFL. If you plan on supporting yourself and two kids while your husband is going to school, it's very unlikely that you'd find a job teaching EFL or tutoring or doing both that would come close to covering your expenses unless your husband's study-abroad program covers most of the expenses for the entire family. If not, I can't imagine that you could make enough money as an EFL teacher/tutor in Mexico to support yourself and your kids (rent, utilities, work visa, food, clothing, kids' education, etc.) while staying in the country for such a short amount of time.
Realistically, I'd say your best bet would be to have enough money in advance to support yourself and your two children for the semester that you plan to be in Mexico. It might be possible to cover some of your overall expenses by teaching/tutoring EFL, espcially if you could get a job teaching for ITESM (Instituto Tecnolgico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey,) where pay is usually better. Also, if the Mexican university where your husband will be studying has an EFL program, it might be worth checking there to see if there are any job openings for the semester. |

Decent schools in Madrid won't be too happy about taking on a teacher with an on-line certificate, because of lack of teaching practice, but as you'll have had loads of teaching practice, it's a bit of a paradox. There are good one month TESOL courses to be had in Spain, I did mine in Galicia and got a job near Valencia straight after I'd finished. |
