Quick poll here, though this just may be my Canuck blood boiling a little.
When is hockey coming back? Soccer/futbol just doesn't cut it.
I though it would.
When the strike started, I thought it would hold me over.
It's not.
Help. |

Hey,
I feel your pain...I too am a canuck missing my hockey.
Unfortunately, I also miss the pay cheque, I work for the Calgary Flames and there appears to be no end in sight...The WHL teams are developing well, but it's just not the same.
A friend and I are actually planning an extended adventure to the Puerto Vallarta region in the early part of 2005...maybe to teach, maybe not.
I can't sit around and wait for the big babies to strap their skates on, I've been told off the record that we're probably looking at November 2005.
It's a perfect excuse for me to hit the road and explore Mexico...a gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do....
Don't worry, they'll be back eventually
(I'll be sure to keep you posted if I hear anything closer to the source ) |

If you make it to DF, look me up. I brought a dozen sticks, equipment for two goalies, and my skates down from Canada. Just waiting for Chapala to freeze over then we're all set. Meantime, road hockey will have to do. |

Might have better luck here in Toluca Guy! at the lake in el Nevado. We have 4 Canucks working here now and they are "threatening" to change ITESM - Campus Toluca's sport from American football to hockey! |

hey Guy,
I'll definitely get in touch if we made it to DF, I'd love to play a little hockey with ya....I too shall bring my skates.
My brother played hockey with a Canadian national team in Mexico city a few years back, so I know there's ice there somewhere
If it makes you feel any better the weather here is hardly fit for hockey. It's 7 above right now and the sun is shining. Aside from the fact that it gets dark at 4:30 in the afternoon, you'd have no idea that it was supposed to be winter-like.
I'm actually heading down to the Dome for a shift tonight, no hockey though, it's for an REM concert.
Should be good,
bye for now,

I'll settle for watching the Ottawa 67's on video if my folks can send down some tapes.
Ice in Mexico? Usually only in my cuba libres. There are two rinks in town, although they seem to have a tough time surfacing here. Not in the culture I supposes.
Do me a favor and bring a couple of pucks. I only brought those orange floor hockey balls down, and my dog already ate one. |

I'll be sure to pack a few pucks...even if I don't make it as far as DF, I'll make sure you get them somehow You sound so sad...
When I go to work tonight I'll see if I can hunt down Ken King, Our fearless Flames leader and get an actual update for you, but don't hold your breath.
If you can track down a satellite feed, I know the NHL channel is replaying last season...it helps to ease the burn.
Lata,

So the thrills and spills of the 'Apertura 2004' doesn't do it for you? Tut, tut, tut...
When I was in Guadalajara, I went along to the local ice rink and met a Canadian who was the trainer for the Guadalajara ice hockey team; 'Guadalajara Guerreros' or something like that. He said the Mexicans were quite good actually and that his team played in a league of some kind (against which other teams I ask!?)
Have you tried your local 'pista de hielo'? Warning: they probably won't have the silky smooth surfaces you're used to in Canada. Our rink had so many bumps and craters I thought I was in the Andes at one point.
Good luck with your search |

Canadians and hockey... is that why you all are so peaceful? you get out your frustrations in (at?) the ice rink?
Had a student in the class today wearing (I kid you not) a tuque and a coat that looked like a parka. I said he looked like a Canadian and all he needed was a hockey stick. He said he has one at home Maybe he was Canadian in a former life! |

In my 4 years in DF, I've gone skating at the Sante Fe rink twice. It's too far away to go on a regular basis, and the ice there is exactly as you've described the GDL ice. They were looking for hickey coaches too...lastima that I can't commit enough time to it. I'm too busy writing silly posts in the forums it seems. |

Still no end in sight as the owners and the players are not even talking. The owners want a cap on salaries and the players will not allow that to happen. The whole season is likely to be lost.
The state of hockey is in the hands of a couple of arrogant lawyers who don't seem to care about all those people who work in the arenas and depend on hockey to make their living.
In the meantime, many NHLers are over in Europe stealing jobs from marginal players who were not good enough for the NHL, who make their living playing hockey over there.
A sad state of affairs indeed.
Oh well, I prefer road hockey anyways. Perhaps I could join Guy "Lafleur" Courchesne for a game. Not for the money, just for the love of the game. |

We have our first snow fall today! Yippee!! Big fat fluffy flakes!
Ok, ok so all my co-workers here in Canada (Montreal) are grumbling (bah-humbug) but I think it's beautiful!
One thing I thought was funny while working in Mexico was explaining the cold weather and snow concept to Mexicans. And then, to my surprise, I got my first real experience with huge hail pellets in Len! |

Many years ago, like, in the 80's, this kind of silliness was solved by a bench clearning brawl, one that would include all the players, the goalies, the coaches, a waterboy, and a hot dog vendor
I've started playing hockey with my nephew and all his friends. It's touch starting from scratch...like simply how to hold a stick. I'll have to teach a proper poke-check a little later I spose |
