The gates at the campus I'm at are manned 24/7.
Water is promptly turned off at 11pm.
Campus internet is shut off at 10:20pm.
Weird. |

Er, you can't get water after 11?
Surely that's, like, dangerous? |

11:00 ? I'm not used to going out before 11 let alone be IN by 11. Geez at home I was in the habit of going out around 2ish. Find a good booze-can and it's open till 5. No need to go out bvefore 2.
Chinese get out of bed too early is half the problem. |

Yeah, all the bars and clubs in Wuhan don't get going til about 11 ish either.
Its more about the school being arses than a genuine reflection upon chinese social life... |

They want you wide awake for those early morning classes... so you go around waking up the kids. |

OK so tonight I had my first experience with "going over the gate."
I came home long after the 11 p.m. lock - down, and the guard just could not be persuaded to get up from his deep sleep (presumably too much baijiu). So we banged and banged and eventually I just had to climb over.
I had some help, but couldn't manage without nearly impaling myself / twisting my ankle. But here I am, safely, in one piece!
It's really not so bad. But I think that if I sign up again for another year here (and please notice I said IF, Michael), I will insist on being given that goddamn key to the gate. |

What is the big attraction to working in a jail, er, prison, er, dorm-type school?
I just don't get it.
Are you being paid big bucks for this?
Most schools I see that have on-campus residences pay anywhere from 3000 to 6000 a month. Ouch!
Working for small money so that you can be treated as a child is not something I would ever consider. Are there any benefits to a job like this? |

Yes, but only for the prisons. The inmates leave and the detention centres are able to hire new gullible flesh without having to worry about renegotiating contracts with better terms and conditions and pay. |
