I am moving to Hong Kong in the next few weeks and I wanted to ask for some advice in regards to accomodation.
One of my schools is in Kowloon Bay, and the other is in Kwun Tong. Would I be able to rent a one bedroom flat in either of these areas for 7500-8500? How far of a commute would it be if I were to live in the New Territories?
Also, can anyone recommend an inexpensive hotel for my first few days/weeks in Hong Kong?
Thanks for the help,
Jen |

That should be no problem, 7500-8500 is plenty.

Depends where you live in NT of course, could be quite close, could be a long way, but as your schools are close together you might as well live near them as it's not an expensive area. Lots of great restaurants in Kowloon Bay too, especially if you like Thai, Vietnamese etc.

Don't know much about hotels I'm afraid, but the old Airport Hotel is in that area, not sure how much rooms go for there though. |

For a good cheap hotl, try the Wang Fat Hotel at Causway Bay. Sorry, don't know how close that is to where you are, as I'm not local. I'm moving to HK in two weeks too. I've stayed at the Wang Fat twice, and its only about 240HK-300HK dollars a night, depending on whether you want a shared bathroom or not. It's a good place. Also, check out the thread below (maybe on the second page) about cheap hotels in HK. It lists the contact details for Wang Fat and other hotels. Wang fat is also on the net, so do a web search. |

It could be worth enquiring with some of the slightly more upmarket hotels if you are planning a long stay. Rates for stays of 2weeks+ can be very reasonable, but like I say, you have to ask as these rates are rarely advertised.
A lot of people recommend Rent-a-room in TST, Kowloon. I've stayed there for a couple of nights before and it was pretty much no frills, but nonetheless secure. Prices were ok, I suppose. Check their site:

Best of luck with the move. |

This is an excerpt from one of Ludwig's more informative and civilised posts (yes, he can be nice!). He claims to live in the very beautiful and serene Sai Kung, so this should give you some idea about travelling from the North into the city:

Ludwig, how long would you estimate it to take you to get to Kowloon Tong on an average day? |
That would be a 20-minute walk down to the minibus stop (that factor alone is enough to keep the rent within reasonable limits), then a wait of no more than 10 minutes for a bus, then a 15-minute racing-style ride down to Choi Hung MTR, then a 20 minute MTR ride to Kowloon Tong (trains every 2 or 3 minutes). |

Thanks for all your help. I think I will have a look in Kowloon Bay as it sounds like a nice, yet inexpensive area. Also, I found a hotel in kowloon that is quite reasonable. It's called the Hotel Concourse (for anyone who is interested).
One more question for all the NETs out there. Did you get an advance in salary? If so, did you receive it straight away?
Thanks again,

Hi Jen, Welcome to NETdom! I received my salary advance on my first official day of duty last year. My base school was/is very well organised and the cheque was prepared and signed ready for me when I arrived.
There is a Discussion Room run by the British Council for PNETs, but it is closing down at the end of this month. A continuation of the Discussion Room has just been started up -- I recommend you sign up. You can ask questions there and other PNETs usually know the answers, you can also share teaching ideas, etc. It's a great lifeline for all of us.

You should have no problems to rent in either Kwun Tong or Kowloon Bay because these are not expensive areas.
