Hey guys

I am finally here in Japan, getting all settled down. One of the things that I have grown to love is the Whacky programing on TV. I mean, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't change my Cable TV in Canada for Japanese programing, but I love it!

Majority of the shows here are all about FOOD. One of my favourite shows is called DEBUYA which I seemed to remember translated into FAT or FATTY-RESTAURANT. The hosts are the well known Papaya-Suzuki who sports an afro and has a funky little dance here and there. Then there's a muscular sailor (I forgot his name) who is also pretty funny. Then my favourtie, Ishizuka, who is credited for the infamous word "Mai-Yu" which is backwards for Umai - basically translating to "Ooishi" or Delicious! They travel to different places, trying out different foods and doing WHACKY things.

I also tune to Channel 8 on Monday nights and I watch a program about a group of Japanese that travel to Kenya and do various things. I don't understand I word they speak, but their GESTURES are very clear, and so I enjoy this as well. Tonight I can't wait to find out what happens to the the girl and guy who have been featured for 10 episodes now. The guy who sports a spikey hair and looks like the Japanese soccer player you see on the Japanese Advertisements in the trains for a Canon camera. The girl, who is really cute is interested in him, but she was crying because I think she had to go back to Japan. So tonight I will find out what will happen - I can't wait.

Another show I watch before I go to work is also on Channel 8 at 10am everyday. Basically, the show re-enacts a true story of a regular person and exaggerates the re-enactment by making actors act in a comedic way or a dramatic way. I love the computer voices they do of the actual person speaking with a censored-picture of the victim. This show is hilarious, and I sometimes wish I could act for the show.

Have you guys seen these shows yet? I love them, I think we should have the same things in Canada. I miss Cable TV, but Japanese programing also has good programing.

Yeah, when I first got here I loved them. Found them really crazy and out there..... but now they all look the same (how many variety shows does a country need?!?!) and are really pretty boring. I'm proudly watching bought dvds and watching my Aussie news online at http://www.seven.com.au/sunrise

I watch a lot of the variety shows and some of them are pretty funny but i do think that it gets a bit juvenile where grown men are dressed up as fruit or people hitting each other over the head with plastic hammers. People playing games on TV like 12 year olds.

Talents in Japan are famous for being famous and being TV celebrities, not for any intrinsic ability or acting skills. Japanese TV needs hundreds of these somehow 'interesting' people to fill its guest lists. People like Ishizuka because he's 'porky' (he actually lost weight once I heard and lost a lot of work so he put it back on) and now goes around the country stuffing his face and appearing on quiz shows.

I know what show you are talking about, but I can't stand it. Some parts are funny, though.

It's called Ai Nori (The Love Ride) and they travel around the world. It is another reality TV show where people can get rejected and have to fly home to Japan. It's one of my favorite shows, along with London Hearts.

You're missing out if you don't watch London Hearts, SMAPxSMAP, and Gakkou ikou. Try and tape the shows if you are at work, excellent bits. Utaban is great also. I'm more of a fan of music shows than the food shows, but they do a great food bit at the beginning of SMAPxSMAP called Bistro SMAP.

With very few exceptions, Japanese TV is mindless, childish & unintelligent.

A perfect match for those who enjoy it.

Anybody remember Takeshi Jo?
Beat Takeshi would create these amazing obstacle courses and people would have to try to get through them.

I'm not a fan of Beat Takeshi's TV work, but man can he play a yakuza/samurai/strange-man great in films! Japanese TV is fun if you let it be. There was one sore party pooper at our apartment complex who would always winge about Japanese TV, no one liked him because the rest of us were having a blast watching it.

Boy you have been here a long time.

Sonomama Higashi was in that group too and they dressed up in hakama and drove around a stadium in tanks firing water cannons etc.
