|
|
Myths:
1.Why,anybody can teach TESOL! You don't need any qualifications!
2. It is okay to teach illegally, because lots of people do it and nobody ever gets caught.
3.A TESOL contract is actually worth more than the paper it is written on...employers always follow their responsibilities as outlined in the contract.
4.Blondes have more fun and because they look like a.Leonardo di Caprio,or b)Sharon Stone, they are automatically "good teachers"
5.If foreign teachers complain about something in the country they are in,why it is always THEIR fault...and if they do not like the country, they should leave immediately. |

And then there are the eternal myths:
Your check is in the mail
I'm from the government and I want to help you.
I'll never do THAT again.
I will ALWAYS love you.

If that's true, then:
In China they never overcharge foreingers.
You can stay at any hotel you like.
And in general :
You don't need to learn the local language to improve your quality of life.
"Our teachers have all fervrently studies at university for four years."
"Speakers of your native language cannot teach you a foreign language because they're translating in their head, and it slows down their fluency." - These are rough translations of a NOVA phamplet I once saw.
If you have any problems, you can just phone head office for help.
Being a reduntant cog in a bloated beaurocracy back home just to scrape by is bliss, but teaching EFL overseas for a living is not having a real life.
We'll send someone over to fix it right away (exception: Japan. Wow ... they say 9:15 am and brother (sister), they're there at 9:15:00:00 am. 9 times out of 10, barring earthquakes).
If you sit your posterior in a chair in a room that just so happens to be a classroom, inhabited by someone who just so happens to be foreign, English will magically get transferred into your brain with no other effort required on your part.
Wow, am I getting that bitter already? Really, it's all in good fun! |
