It doesn't matter where you are in the world, someone is making movies (unless you're in the middle of the jungle somewhere and you've got no access to technology but I disgress). So for this thread, I would like to ask, what is the best, worst or strangest local film you've ever seen.
I mean local as in local to the country in which you currently work. |

As I am currently in the UK I suppose it is going to be Get Carter, Naked (Mike Leigh film that I can't believe isn't out on DVD) or the Holy Grail. When I am in Japan I will say Battle Royale which never seems to bore me no matter how many times I watch it. The sequel, however, is dogshit. |

Personally, I think most of the movies I've seen here in India are pretty bizarre. I've yet to see one that hasn't broken out into an extravagant song-and-dance number with dozens of extras joining the fray (they remind me of music videos where all the bystanders inately know all the moves).
As for American movies, I've never seen anything stranger than David Lynch's "Eraserhead" ("In heaven, everything is fine..."). Wow, what a head trip. |

My favourite Chinese films:
The Road Home
Xiu xiu (watched this the other day, good but disturbing)
Blind Shaft
Worst:
Springtime in a Small Town (hyped up by the Guardian in the UK, I found it boring TBH)
Wierdest:
Days of Being Wild. Quite odd Hong kong film... |

Hmmm, I really enjoyed "The Scent Of Green Papaya" - even though it's a Vietnamese film, I watched it here in Hong Kong.
When I was in Thailand I saw "Ong-Bak" which was a bit dumb, but really enjoyable...
The worst has to be "The House Of Flying Daggers", while visually stunning had a ridiculous plot, really bad acting and the two most whorish stars in Chinese cinema - Andy Lau and Zhang Yiyi. |

Iv'e seen that vietnamese film. Pretty good.
If you want to see a good Thai film, I really recommend Nang Nak. A quality horror film.
Actually, not really horror - its more emotional and ghostly than a lot of this asian horror. |

For Hong Kong there are two movies that rate as some of the best movies ever for me..
Cheung King Express (Wong Kar Wai)
Little Cheung ( Fruit Chan)
Both wonderful wonderful wonderful movies. (Not sure of the spelling)
Honorable mention goes to
Durian Durian,
In the Mood for Love,
Golden Chicken, 1 and 2,
Love on a Diet |

Among my favorites for Mexican films are Y Tu Mam Tambin and Amores Perros.
One of the best Latin American films I've ever seen is Central do Brasil (Central Station). |

Do you not think it is also really, really funny in a kind of savagely bleak way?
"I hope I haven't given you Aids, Sophie"
Louise: How did you get here?
Johnny: Well, basically, there was this little dot, right? And the dot went bang and the bang expanded. Energy formed into matter, matter cooled, matter lived, the amoeba to fish, to fish to fowl, to fowl to frog, to frog to mammal, the mammal to monkey, to monkey to man, amo amas amat, quid pro quo, memento mori, ad infinitum, sprinkle on a little bit of grated cheese and leave under the grill till Doomsday. |

Golden Chicken is the story of a not so attractive prostitute in Hong Kong trying to make money any way she can. The first one was stupid but funny the second one was just stupid.
My favorites for China: Blind Shaft, Incense, Beijing Bicycle, most Wong Kar Wai films, Raise the Red Lantern, King of Masks, Little Chinese Seamstress, The Road Home and Not One Less. There are a lot more but these are ones, except for Incense, that one could find copies of if really looking. |

"Golden Chicken is the story of a not so attractive prostitute in Hong Kong trying to make money any way she can."
I can't imagine what logic connects that title to that plot. Or perhaps I don't want to imagine it.
"I normally see the strangest movies on long bus rides whilst out on my travels across the country. I've no idea what the titles of these movies are, but I've witnessed a comedy about bomb disposal experts, an overweight and very old star trying to convince the audience that he can still keep up with the bad guys in an action thriller, and a kung fu/snooker/comedy involving a cameo from the British snooker player Jimmy White"
I saw some of those when I was taking the boats around South-East Asia. Some of them looked like they came from mainland China. I particularly remember one that looked like a bad kung fu film sans kung fu with weird, weird sub-titles. |
