Ken:

I've actually told plenty of my people in my time, and in this thread, that if they plan to stay in Thailand forever then the TEFL (either TEFL Int. or Text and Talk) is a better choice -- certainly more geared to teaching here and teaching kiddies. However:

"Bob, there are some quite big differences between many of the courses, most noticebly maybe, the focus on adults (CELTA) or kids or whatever. Some courses offer more classroom practice or more peer feedback (of great value, in my experience)... One large advantage with CELTA courses is that each course has an inspector come in and make sure the course is being run correctly and consistent with established CELTA Course Guidelines...On the downside, that makes the courses more rigid, with less flexibilty to focus the training more to a particular locality, like Thailand...

This expresses my point -- the CELTA is more generalized or flexible for working OUTSIDE of Thailand.

That's all I'm trying to say.

Gotcha!

But surely if it's not flexible to teach in Thailand, this would apply to other countries? I've not done the CELTA so it's not really fair for me to comment, but do you think it's more geared towards ESL? Or Europe per se? Anyone?

The CELTA is generally geared towards small (six to ten) groups of students from mixed backgrounds--the type of students one generally finds in language schools in the UK.

This is in no way meant to be an attack on the CELTA. Just a generalization from what I know and what I have been told.

?

Anyone else that has actually attended the CELTA (or any other course) want to comment on pros and cons?

Pro: Trainers will be absolutely qualified, resources will be prime, students will be eager. The biggest pro, hoewever, has nothing to do with the educational content of the CELTA, rather it's the brand of the CELTA itself. It's not any better for the act of teaching than most TEFL certificates, but it is better at landing work than most TEFL certificates -- marginally so, in most cases, but still better.

Con: Of the four weeks, we had one day that addressed teaching kids. Training is for non-homogenous L1 groups, which is uncommon abroad. Cost is usually 25 to 50% higher than non-brand TEFL certificates. Traces of that old British superiority shitheelness. Workload is quite demanding. People can fail the course and won't get their money back.
