And frankly, unless you're in Tokyo (which neither she nor you are), the only way you'd meet other foreigners outside of work is to go looking for them. Which makes the OP's original post even more absurd--what happened...she met a guy at a bar that wouldn't go home with her?:

I'm married, so I neither go out to bars or looking for men to sleep with me...although if I wanted to I'm sure I wouldn't have much trouble doing so---foreigner or not.

How many Japan-based foreigners have either of you actually met?:

Actually, quite a lot. I see at least four or five on the way to and from work everyday and even more when I'm out on the weekends.

You said it not me! Don't try to pin that statement on me...

I have never even seen the movie. Sorry can't relate, but I do believe in my earlier posts I corrected my language about this issue. Maybe you are one of YOUR so-called Canadians who neglected to read the full post? Rolling Eyes

Well nawlinsgurl, it does look like we have a different definition of racism.

Here's my definition (which, I believe, is the standard one):

Racism:

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Racism

For instance:

nawlinsgurl wrote:

But you begin to wonder when you meet two British people who tell you (straight forward, totally sober, and this is their first time meeting you) "We never want to go to America, there is no diversity and the people have no culture." To your face, as an American.

Sorry, I just don't see the above as racist--i.e., they apparently dislike America, not Americans per se. (By the way, get used to it--there's a lot of anti-US sentiment out there....) You and "TravelZen" feel, apparently, that this is racism--which is a pretty idiosyncratic usage of the term, in my opinion, but whatever.

Regarding your other example:

Quote:
Then to hear of a teacher telling a Japanese student to say "What's up my nigga?" (who asked for "slang" words to use on his trip to America) I was incredibly offended. He could have taught the student "Get Jiggy" or "Krunk", not a phrase like that. Obviously racist.

Obviously, he's an idiot. Is he a racist, though? Not so obvious to me--especially considering that a number of kids (of all races, including African American) in the US use this slang term in their daily discourse. Heck, by your definition, the whole US rap industry is racist as well.... Confused

Wait, I just noticed something:

Apparently, you're right--I do need to read what you wrote more closely: Let me get this straight, you heard of a teacher who supposedly said this, yet didn't personally see/hear the teacher do this? And this is your only other bit of, uh, evidence? And based on this hearsay, not to mention being slighted by two US-hating Brits, you claim that a lot of foreigners are racist? And travelzen agrees with you on this? Wow....

Yeah, you and travelzen are right...there are a lot of racists in Japan--at least one, and soon to be two.....

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans out there. As for me, I'm done with this thread. PM me if you want to continue....

Instead of being offended by anti-American sentiment, try to prove to other foreigners that you don't fit the generalization that the rest of the world sees Americans as. I know a lot of foreigners in Japan from a variety of areas: Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, Korea, Italy, Sweden, and France. I had to prove to all of them that I am not a gun toting redneck who plasters the American flag all over his possessions and claims that America is the best country in the world. (I'm the opposite of that). My Canadian friends hated America the most - they still think I am just the exception to the rule.

What you are doing is the same as what you are being offended by - generalizing. I haven't seen one post in this thread giving an example of racism.

On a sidenote - the guy from Sweden was so pro-America it made me sick, and he's only ever visited once! Shocked I didn't know anyone outside of America was pro-America at this point - heck, even a large portion of America is ashamed of America right now.

What's very funny though is how mad some non-Americans get when you point out how narrow-minded their views of the United States are.

That's when you can turn the hypocrisy meter on, sit back, and laugh:

"No, I'm the TOLERANT one! Not you bloody Yanks! That's why we all hate you!"
