|
|
My husband and I are in the process of researching and looking for teaching positions in HK. We both have taught in South Korea for one year, but do not have CELTA's. I have a few questions that I hope an informed person in HK may be able to answer.
1. Do you need 2 years of teaching experience to get a work visa?
2. How likely would it be for us to get NET positions after working in HK for a year?
3. Do we have to have CELTA's?
4. Could we come to HK on a tourist visa, take a CELTA course at the British Council and then find teaching positions?
5. When is there a big turnover for teaching positions?
We are looking to spend several years in HK, and would like to know the best way to go about getting good jobs. We plan on making this our career and are not soley into it for the money like many people.

Whatever nick we choose to give him is now moot. He's gone. That must be the fastest that he's ever been banished! |

As long as an employer would sponsor (or hire and help) you to get a work visa, no rules to require at least 2 years experience.

It is very competitive to get in the NET program, most teachers have actual teaching degree and formal teaching experience. I would say it is more depends on your prior school work and experience. Your one year HK expereience probably helps a bit.

Check with the HK immigration:

I'm sure he'll be back, though, he'll probably be banned even quicker next time. Anyone notice that he gets more malicious each time he comes back?
Anyway...
I've heard that they're planning on assigning one NET for one school as opposed to the current "share the NET" system. So theoretically, they'll be needing twice as many at that point so it's could be a golden opportunity for you! |

There would be very little chance indeed of you getting on to the EMB Net scheme. The conditions for the new intake are getting harder and harder.
You will need qualified teacher status in your home country and a few years experience. |

Hi Dodge,
Email Jenny at [email protected] Her primary school is looking for native English teachers but you don't necessarily have to have teaching qualifications. |

How stringent do they tend to be that your actual First Degree had to have been in English? I'm teaching in China at the moment, just have a BA in French and Politics and CELTA, but am thinking of returning to the UK do take the PGCE - would I be able to get on the Net scheme after that? |
