If you're changing cash you are gonna get reamed wherever you change it. Grit your teeth and prepare for a shafting. Sorry.

withdrawing my money from an American bank account through the Japanese post office ended up being the best exchange rate possible.

It's always best to exchange cash in your home country or the country in which you are exchanging from.

Of course, the exchange rate for your own notes is better at home. What I was saying is that, being that I had an American bank account and not a Japanese one, the exchange rate (when you are in Japan) is much better at the post office than a bank.

If you are going to exchange your cash all in a lump sum one time only, do it before you leave home, or convert your money to travelers checks. (When I used travelers checks, the official exchange rate was 120 Yen to the dollar. I got 119 Yen when exchanging Very Happy not a bad trade! And that was at the counter in Narita airport!)

Citibank is quite good. No commission, good rates, IF you can get an account with them.

Not sure about where to change money, but sending it home is simple using Lloyds TSB Reemittances...same day service, competitive xchange rates etc
