hi everyone,
I am a non-native english speaker but love the english language. I have just graduated from a bachelor of physical education and english in an english speaking country. I intend to start an EFL course shortly after chrismas. I am also really motivated to go to Istanbul and teach there for a while. Do you have anyone or have any ideas if it is also possible for non-native speakers of english to get a job there. Please let me know as I would die to go to Istanbul and work as a teacher. Thanks for your input.

You should not have much trouble landing a job. Plenty of non natives work in Turkey as EFL teachers, and many are more competent than your usual run of the mill "native speaker teacher" (who - in most cases are not real/trained teachers at all, but travellers subsidizing their life style with a "teaching job").
In Istanbul there are plenty of jobs, and if you go to the Asian side (a short boat trip away) - even more. Get a list of schools, go around with multiple copies of your c.v. and you are sure to get offers. This is a good time, because many "teachers" go home for Christmas and do not return.
For lodging - ghost recommends "Villa Marmara" in Cevizli. The cost is about $5-$7 per night for a clean room in a house that has been converted into a mini hotel. The price includes breakfast. If you go to the main train station in Istanbul, you will see the proprietor of "Villa Marmara" waiting for the backpackers who get off the trains from Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary etc.....He is an old guy with white hair, and he shows you the guest book, with photos, and comments from other travellers. Staying at "Villa Marmara" is much better than staying in the smelly hostels of Sultanhamet (which are overpriced for what you get). The only drawback is that Cevizli is about a 45mins-1 hour travel time from the City Centre, but the proprietor will give you lifts to and from at different times of the day. Otherwise you get a combination of dolmus/train/boat to get to the city centre. You meet average Turks on the journey, and it is good for basic conversation. Cevizli is interesting as it is far removed from the usual tourist haunts that tourists go to. In Cevizli you get to see how the average Turks live and work. |

Hi, my friend! I'm a non-native speaker struggling in Turkey... I don't want to discourage you, you must try it for yourself... well...since you have studied in an English speaking country it must be easier for you, but believe me my friend it's not that easy, keep it in mind to prevent you from getting too frustrated if you are rejected over and over again because of your nationality. I'm used to it, I don't even care anymore, but it was tough in the beginning...
Good luck! |
