A local community college is offering a TESL certification course. My question is will this be what I need to work in other regions of the world (I'm in the US, interested in SE Asia, N. Africa, or Latin America)?

The certification requires completion of 2 40 hour courses. It also offers the chance to volunteer with the large spanish speaking immigrant population in my city. Will this course allow me to fullfill a school's certification requirements (most want TEFL or equivalent )?

I'm asking because this is far cheaper than the thousand dollar courses advertised all over the place.

Thanks for any advice!

Bump.

This is a good question, and I'm sort of waiting to see an answer myself.

Anybody?

Colleen

If the community college is accredited by the state, and you will receive a certificate from the Board of Education allowing you to teach ESL, then go for it. Good luck. Very Happy

Thank you, juststeven.

I suppose an additional benefit would be financial aid, overwhelmingly avaliable for community college courses but not necessarily for certificate courses.

Thanks,

Colleen

If you take advantage of the practice teaching with Spanish-speakers, you will have excellent opportunities in Latin America.

My only concern would be that if the course is offered for state certification/endorsement to teach ESL, it may target those who already have their state teaching license. If that is the case, the course may go very lightly on things like classroom management, scope and sequence of lesson planning, and some other aspects that would be very helpful for those who lack degrees in education and teaching experience. The course might also include some components specific to teaching ESL which would be relatively worthless to know when teaching abroad, such as the role of ESL teachers in public and private school systems in the USA, for example. The community college should be able to provide you with a syllabus of the course or at least a somewhat detailed course description. I'd suggest checking that out prior to making your decision. Additionally, I'd try to find out the backgrounds of the instructors teaching the course. They've probably had some experience teaching abroad, but if their only experience is teaching ESL within the USA, they might be somewhat limited in their perceptions of teaching EFL.

Excellent points Ben...I had no idea you were such a stickler for the difference between ESL and EFL, as I am. We are a rare breed it seems lately. Thinking of LATIE and Teach and Travel Taco College here...

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm going to contact the school for more info on the course. What other sorts of things should I be looking for with regards to my goals? I want to both teach here at home temporarily (night courses for adults, tutor for children) as well as leave here one day and teach in another country.

I'll let you know what I find out because your input is really helpful.
