Hey there,

I live in Wuchang, the big university district of Wuhan. I've found that Wuhan is not a bad city at all. Certainly it can be uninspired at times in that there isn't a hell of a lot to see and do here, but there are some nice spots such as Zhongshan Park and East Lake. There are many of the amenities of home (KFC, McDonalds, Carrefour) and there's plenty of what's uniquely Chinese here - little street barbecue restaurants, good tailors, and there're some nice bars and clubs too.

Yeah, pollution. But it's worse in Beijing, trust me.
Contact us when you get here, we still haven't really had a "Dave's ESLers of Wuhan reunion" yet. (Is "re" the right word? We haven't even had one).

Yeah, I don't think its a fantastic place but its not as bad as some people make out. There are some places from the sounds of it with no bars or clubs at all, no western supermarkets, where pizza hut would be a pipe dream and where people stare at you in the street as if you were a martian. Next to that Wuhan is paradise.

We should have a ESL Cafe meetup early next year. At the moment I am suffering enforced teetotalism due to the requirements of 'er indoors!

I know the feeling, only, in my case, it's ... well, as I say to kids who ask me my age, "it's a secret!!!!!" Very Happy Very Happy

It would be interesting for all TEFLers in Wuhan to get together at some point, but it is quite a risque business. Why? Well, the anticipation of meeting posters in person may far exceed the actual event, so be aware! Shocked

An ESLers reunion is a GREAT idea! I can't wait to actually be in Wuhan! While I'm at it, any suggestions as to how much of my own money I should bring with me? My school is reimbursing my flight and paying for my rent but I'll have to survive at least a month before I get my first pay. Note that I'm not a shopaholic, compulsive eater or an alcoholic! lol

If your school is decent they will pay you for your flight straight away. If they are like most schools you will probably have to wait until the end of your contract.

As to that first month, well tbh if you aren't into going out drinking there is relaly little to spend money on in Wuhan. A couple of hundred quid should be enough. Still, I'd advise bringing more - you never know.

I just started teaching about an hour from wuhan and I think the area is quite friendly. Shanghai was to big for my liking. The area is quite cheap and its polluted. nothing compared to india though. It has bben good for culture shock being in a smaller town near wuhan than in wuhan itself. good luck

Sorry to stray away from your question, but when are you going to be in Wuhan? I just accepted a job there and would like to contact you when you arrive.

Speaking of Guangzhou, I've visited there a few times now. My first impression was overwhelmingly negative - dirty and smell place, unfriendly people, and lots of thieves at the train station. The subsequent visits proved better though, once I got used to the place a bit.

As China is such a big and diverse place, the regional areas certainly have lots of differences and you can have mini 'culture-shock' while traveling around the place.

This was most evident on the train ride when I came to Shanghai where I am now. On the train I sat with three 'Bei Fang expats' who had lived and worked in Guangzhou for 7 years. There was also a couple from Anhui province and a single woman migrant who just got cheated by a tout at the Guangzhou railway station. She was then going to Shanghai to try to find work - unemployed, unfortunately.

This whole mix of people was within 2 hard seat carriages. We were brought together by the common hard seat train experience, though our the backgrounds couldn't have been more different.

I had a blast on a hardseat journey from Beijing to Guangzhou last year.I ended up sitting with some police cadets. One of the cadets spoke excellent English and we were laughing for hours. He was doing all these different American dialects.I have no idea how he knew so many. Then we talked about independent films and horror flicks. He and his friends wanted me to get off in Wuhan and and meet their families.
When they finally got off the train I thought I was going to be able to sleep. The minute they got off the train the guy who had been sitting across from me started talking. Then a nice lady got on in Changsha.Needless to say I got absolutely no sleep on that journey , but had a great time.I remember they bought me food, too.I tried to give them money, but they would not take it.

Steve

I have seen my share of places in India, and believe me..Wuhan is a lot better in terms pollution and cleanliness. Calcutta and Delhi are just nightmares!!!!!

Yeah the poverty in those two cities is abysmal. Although I think the air may be a bit worse in Wuhan.

its a different sort of bad air, mind you. In India its more dirty, in Wuhan it feels more like pollution from cars and stuff.

True. Calcutta is pretty bad compared to Delhi. I still remember the people living on the streets. Eating, Bathing everything...right on the streets. Well that was 4 years ago. Things might have changed. Northeastern part of India is a wonderful place to visit. Well, I am from Nepal....the NE India is pretty much the same compared to some places in Nepal.

Kathmandu's senario's the same. Dirty and Polluted. Sad . Anyone been there?

You're from Nepal? I'd love to go there some time. Looks beautiful. But the situation there now is pretty bad...

Did you go to the Kulu VAlley?
