|
|
Hi,
I would like to teach english in Cambodia or Thailand next year.
What are my odds?
To sum up:
-I am caucasian, 31 year old woman from the Netherlands with good presentation
-Have a bachelors degree in International Business (the course was completely taught in the english language by an international school in the Netherlands)
-have worked in International Trade for 5 years doing business primarily in english and german language
- since July 2004 I reside in Australia and I will stay here untill March/ April 2005 when I intend to go to SEA.
- most view my english as very good, and am considered a (near) fluent speaker. Except for the accent of course, which is not that bad at all, definately minor, but no english one!
Another question:
I am thinking about doing a TESOL or CELTA.....
- Would it be better to do a course here in Australia or is TEFL1 in Cambodia or Thailand just as good?
(Maybe course done in an english speaking country would give more value for a non-native speaker? / does a Cambridge course give more value for a non-native speaker?)
- Is it possible to get a job without this degree?
( I am reading a lot of books about teaching, going through cambridge grammar books and pronounciation excercises to freshen up whats available and learn abt the specifics on teaching)
Lots and lots of questions as you see.... Would really appreciate yr opinions! |

Hiya,
there're plenty of us Dutchies out there.
No worries getting a job.
Just keep working on the accent of course.
Your experience is very helpful as well I think, and having lived in Oz is definitely a plus.
You've got a BA, so you don't necessarily need a TEFL to get a job. It does help in your teaching though. At least you know what you're doing then, as opposed to many FT's out there.
I'm not sure about the Thai Celta course, but I'm sure there are plenty of threads about it. The Ozzie one should be good anyhow.
There have been many post regarding non-native, and specifically Dutch, teachers trying for jobs. Do a search and I'm sure you'll get all the info you need.
See ya,
Da jiang (previously working in China, now back in NL.. ) |
