Hi everybody!

No, it's not Dr. Nick. I am a newbie looking for a school in one of the Provinces with a more temperate climate. After reading some of the horror stories, I would love to hear from someone who has a good word to say about one of their past postings. Even better, it would be great to receive a recommendation!

I would prefer a Public School in one of the South-Eastern Provinces. Any of your suggestions are welcomed.

South-east is not temperate; it's sub-tropical!

Most of China is way too hot in the summer for me. But as a teacher you can escape the heat of summer by traveling to the mountains of the Southwest. The winters in Guangdong are the most temperate. If you choose a costal city the air will be a little cleaner than the inland cities.

As to the school, I agree public schools are better than private ones. I prefer to teach at the University level, more specifically, to post-graduate non-English majors. The choice is yours as to the type of student. I like Guangdong because it has many good universities to choose from.

Good luck,
Phil

Thanks for your tips. I was despairing of getting any replies at all! Perhaps I should have posted this in the newbie section. Anyway, I still think the South Eastern Provinces are the way to go. I would rather sweat for a while than freeze my a***e off! Mr. Green

Any recommendations for a school that is well run with reasonable administration is all I am really after. Any takers?

The South West can be nice too. I teach in Kunming, Yunnan. The weather here is what a lot of people consider to be ideal. Never too hot, never too cold (although winters aren't as warm as in Guangdong).

Public universities tend to pay less than private schools, but the jobs are secure (visas and whatnot), and the hours tend to be reasonable. I think in Guangdong you can make quite a lot. I have several friends teaching in Guangzhou and all of them make somewhere in the 8k a month range. Keep in mind the cost of living in the SE is a lot more expensive than in other places. Out here in the SW you can get by on less.

Anyhow, good luck!

Stay away from Jiaxing. They underpay there foreign teachers and cheat them from money whenever they get the chance.
