We're planning a short vacation to Cairo but still haven't been able to decide on a good place to stay. Can anyone offer me some advise?

It will be me with my wife and (4) children so I'd like to find a furnished apartment with a decent kitchen.

I had been told that for approx LE1000 I should be able to get something decent (clean, good condition, not out in the middle of nowhere etc)for a couple of weeks.

Thing is I've searched Google till I can't search no more so I thought the time had come to consult my TESOL colleagues.

Best thing (but kinda scary) is to wait until you get here and then look through some of the classified ads papers... Thats where you're most likely to find good deals. I know thats the best way in Alex, so I can't imagine it would be any different in Cairo!!! I tried looking into buying a flat, and on the Net, the cheapest I could find was about $70000, whereas I know you can get them for a tenth of that price...
I suppose it depends how log you're planning to stay as well. In Alex, minimum rent is a month, unless you want to pay horrendous prices (around 500LE a day), so anything less than that, it might be worth staying in a hotel...
Good luck!!!

If you haven't already been to Cairo, pm me and I can ask around (I am currently in Cairo for a few weeks). Doubt if you would get anything for 1000 LE. As it's short term, you'd probably be looking at 2500 - 3000 LE for a month in an average apartment. However, exchange rate at the moment is almost 12 LE = 1 Sterling. During the winter season you should get a reasonably good place for about 100-125 LE per day. Think a hotel for wife and kids would be unsuitable for that length of time, plus quite expensive.
