I worked for a couple years in various programs for people with emotional/behavioral probs. I was just talking about this with my Girlfriend/business partner last night. The most important thing is, when something happens, they do something totally iNsAne and you have to deal with it (her example was a kids that hung an already dead bird to a blackboard with a message that said "this is what happens to teachers who don't listen") to think wholistically. Ask yourself "how bad is this really?" A year from such an incident, how much will it really matter? Kids swearing or being violent is certainly not very fun to witness, BUT in order to be able to deal with it effectively you need to not lose your cool. When something bad happens, relax and think how much will I care about this tomorrow? Then dont act on your emotions to which say "strangle this kid now!" and diffuse the situation. Seperate kids that are fighting first, then find a way to resolve it when tensions are down. The most important thing is to THINK about what you are doing in the midst of an intense moment. Too many teachers, parents, people wish they could take back those few seconds when they said or did something they wish they never had. And for which is probably very out of character for them.

Hope I helped, I will check back this thread if any of that wasnt clear or if you have any questions.

thanks for the tips

but i was given five examples :

one you take the kids on a field trip and they are acting out?

i said to tell them stop !! if thats doesnt work tell em to stop or i would take em home ? (im strict)

they asked about fighting too

so i said i would break it up, investigate , diffuse, and then have both parties decide on appropriate messures(no contact in so and so place)

they asked what would i do if a kid swore at me and refused to stop

basically tell them to stop! , and then its time for a time out!!! when he goes for a timeout im going for one too

stuff about keeping secrets
tell my supervisor

Maybe i should tell them i not allowed to keep secrets?

My disciplining sucks

discliplining kids and control

I personally think reinforcements are better ---when teachers use discipcline it is the outcome of poor reinforcement schedules

Atlas has a whole slew of good disciplinary measures. Ignore the trouble makers. If that doesn't work, park your keister on their desk. Tell your FAO (if they're the caring type) that you won't teach a peticular class. Have the rest of the class stand while the perps sit. It's all about taking control and letting the students know that there's a time for work, a time for fun, a time to be serious and a time to play - but it's YOU that decides when.
