I still have my car. I often have to park the car in car parks. Here's how payment for use of car parks in HK works:-

Drive to the in-barrier.
Take a ticket, say at 1:00 p.m.
As soon as you take the ticket, generally, you have to pay for a minimum of an hour's parking, on average say HK$18 per hour.
You return to pay your fee at 1:35, pay HK$18.
You return to pay your fee at 2:01, pay HK$36!!
From the time you pay your fee, you have 15 minutes to vacate the car park space.
So you pay HK$18 at 2:00 p.m. you have to vacate by 2:15 p.m.
You pay HK$18 at 1:35 (an hour's fee for 35 minutes' use) you must vacate by 1:50 p.m.
