As it happens, my dear wife and I will be in Kun ming from late June through late August. Like all the other Emperors, Im heading for cool temperatures so cellulite doesnt render through my shirt. I wonder if there is anybody on the frequency that knows the place and can fill me in on what is happening there. Recommendations on food, stuff to do, people to meet, money to be extracted from the gullible, and information about the slinky things will be accepted with relish.

Ahregarding the slinky thingsremember Im an old, pot bellied guy bringing a vicious wife in company, and an interpreter as well, and they watch me like the rapacious, predatory birds that they are.

Its gotta be pseudo slinky.

Regards,

Right after arrival, hang around in the Yunnan University area where there are several really good western restaurants (on and off Wen Lin Jie) and lots of friendly expats. You might still start (been a few years away) at Journey to the East Cafe or down the lane at what was called The Blue Tablecloth and from there to Teresa Pizza or a real Italian restaurant. Enjoy.

Yunnan University also runs a guesthouse that rents out rooms at a bargain rate (at least that was the case in 1999 and the years before).
Another option is the Kunhu HOtel on Beijing Lu. Next to it is a mock-Pizza Hut (well, it was there all through the 1990's until I last visited in 1999). On Beijing Lu - which runs from the Kunming Railway Station to the Kunming NOrth Station (from which trains depart for Hekou on the VIentmaese border), there are several expat-friendly places: There used to be "Jim's Cafe" ("...until 1999...it was there...").
In many cofeehouses - now popular with locals too! - they offer you Yunnan coffee, which is no different to any excellent Java coffee!

But bear in mind that Kunming is the capital of a relatively poor province. Jobs do not exactly abound! There is an EF there, or so I read somewhere!
