Oh, there's money to be made! But, you must have credentials and experience. I make over $4000 (American) a month, without taxes and free housing. But, you must live in the Middle-East. |

Well, this is indeed an interesting thread I've stumbled into. I'm gathering that most of you have been or are in Asia. Sorry to say I haven't been out there and can only use Latin America as an example.

Guy-and Mex pays alot? First I heard of it. Great vacation pay? Most people I met were fighting to get the right amount on their pay cheque. Health care? Spose if you pay enough. Found out that most ot the great food of the world is available right here at home(minus the immodium).
Ps
For truly friendly people you need to go further south. |
Are these the measures of a good quality of life? High pay, high vacation pay? Health care? The only one that you got marginally right was the good food. I'll take what's Mexican and 90% natural over what's first-world and a mere 1% of what nature put into it.
Don't get me wrong. I'm sure lots of people have had all sorts of problems all over the world. Try being elderly, of few resources, and getting needed medication in a US state for example.
No, nomadder, you and I clearly have different measure of the good life. Disputing our own measures of such is like comparing apples and a Macintosh.
The truly amazing lesson that escapes you is that what you put in, you get out, much like a mirror. But hey, this is your place to air out some grievances, right? |

You are right that you need the credentials to get good jobs. That is true in most fields. You don't have to live in the middle east though. I live in Hong Kong and make a bit more than $4000 US a month, get a free ticket home, a 13 month bonus, a housing allowance, and a 15% end of 2 year contract gratuity and I'm not even in the government's scheme. The point is that there are good jobs out there but they don't just follow you home, you need to go and find them. |

Are you familiar with the NET scheme in Hong Kong? Let me break down the pay scale. I am not a part of this scheme but my school runs on the same scale anyway. You can check out the Hong Kong forum if you don't believe the numbers or the NET website which I don't have on hand. If you were to have zero years experience you would make about 30,000 Hong Kong dollars a month that is 3850 US. For every year of experience you get about an extra $1000 to $1500HK or $130 to $200 US. Now I am have 7 years of experience that totals a bit more than $7000 HK plus $30000 for a total of over $37,000HK a month or $4750 US. This is inclusive of the housing but does not include the 13th month or the 15% gratuity or the return airfare that also covers spouses. So you see I am not a troll or a liar but a well paid truth telling English teacher. |

Excuse me! I made a grammatical error in an attempt to enlighten you. Are you really trying to say that someone with experience could never possibly make a mistake of this nature? What is your problem? |

Judging a person's credibility on one simple grammatical error is a bit harsh. If it were numerous errors that never seemed to end, then you could start to rag on them a bit. GWB, here's lookin' at you! |

It's alright, Steven just got a bit of a shock that someone not living in the Middle East is making more money than him. He lashed out and that's the reaction some people have in these situations. Personally, I didn't get into teaching for the money. Now that I've got it, without having to give up any personal freedoms, it is pretty nice. Just in case Steve or anyone else is interested in the pay scale or the program here are the website: http://www.emb.gov.hk/index.aspx?nodeid=1301&langno=1 Oh, but since I made a grammatical error using Steven's logic I guess there really isn't a website. And when they discuss salary remember that it does not include the $10,500 living allowance. Cheers! |

Yes people seem to make all kinds of outrageous assumptions about you based on the limited information of your posts. Ha! People who clearly haven't done their homework. |

Roger-why should they be so snobby?
And why are 1st world countries ironically so boring? For one the social life seems to get lost it seems and then come too many rules and..... |
Who did you refer to as "they" who are "snobby"? The Third-WOrld emigres living in western countries? Or are we being snobbish, pardon me: "snobby", for electing domicile here?
I can tell you, that life in the prosperous West is not necessarily less inspiring or more boring; it is people who are more readily bored because, perhaps, they are bores themselves... They don't know how to use their lifetimes rationally and pleasurably.
I guess, we get too much personal security in eexchange for a little submission to bosses and authorities.
LEt me tell you, CHinese are far more easily bored than we are. As soon as a CHinese person has no task to perform that pays they become drowsy or querulous. Their answer to spare time-induced boredom: watch TV, gamble (they even play chess for money!) or, yes: do more work! |
