Bagpipes, kilts, music and uptight/against expansion attitude-here in New Scotland and backstabbing. Yet friendly in a weird sort of way. |

Rod Stewart
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Roderick David Stewart (born January 10, 1945) is an English singer of Scottish descent. Stewart was the youngest of five children born to Robert and Elsie Stewart. His parents owned a newsagent's shop in North London, and the family resided above the shop. Minutes before Rod Stewart was born in Highgate, London, a German V-2 rocket hit the police station just down the street and exploded.

An Englishman, lecturing on his travels, was speaking disparagingly about the Scots in Canada and the mixing of the race with the Indians.
Youll find, he said, a great number of Scots half-breeds and French halfbreeds, but you cannot find any English half-breeds.
Not surprisingly, shouted a Scot in the audience. The squaws had to draw the line somewhere. |

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to make racist remarks about the Scots. What a load of B@LL@CKS!! Not at all sweeping or anything. "Yet friendly"? Who? All 5 million of us? No, there are some right barstirds and there are some lovely folk, just like anywhere. God, I HATE comments like that - Pahhhhtheticcc. I can't stand the bagpipes and I'd never wear a kilt. I won't even bother to address the "uptight" nonsense.
Oh yes, we scots eat haggis every day, dance the highland fling, wear kilts with no underpants all the time, drink too much whisky blah blah blah.
Rod Stewart's cousin was a mate of mine in North Berwick, South East Scotland ( I say was because I've lost touch) anyway Rod used to come up to Scotland (maybe still does) to visit his family and a game of football or two would be played in the grounds of my mate's parents' hotel, along with other friends of mine. Rod was very clear about regarding himself as a Scot. I remeber seeing TV footage of him supporting Scotland during Scotland - England games back in 70s, when Scotland used to actually have a chance against the English. Scotland produced some brilliant footballers, sadly almost all of them from the 60s and 70s. Jimmy "Jinky" Johnston was probably the greatest of them all. Possibly one of the greatest footballers of all time. |

Ally McLeod...
one of the greatest 20th century icons...
Manager of Scotlands 1978 World Cup squad...a man so wrapped up in his own ego he pronounced that Scotland would win the tournament....!!
They came home after the first round.
Nice one Ally....thanks for the memories.. |

Apparently Mel Gibson is Scottish!!! Almost every morning when I get the taxi to work, the taxi driver asks me where I am from. I answer Scotland and the only thing they know about Scotland is the film Braveheart.
Mel Gibson= William Wallace=Scottish |

Didn't Churchill call Scotland 'the greatest of all small nations' or some such? |

I'm English but must agree that Scotland possesses an impressive history of characters and strong cultural identity. Plus I've always liked porridge and shortbread.
If I could vote for the SNP (Scottish National Party) then I would. This is only partly facetious, as I would actually prefer England to be independent from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We have always done fine on our own, and the Welsh & Scottish are always wanting it - so let's give it to them. Might shut up their relentless & tiresome whining.
(Northern Ireland is another matter. But that would be a different thread with an extreme emphasis on politics & religion.)
What's the definition of a gentleman?
A Scotsman who owns a set of bagpipes, but doesn't play them. |

I don't think most English people would like independance from Scotland, once they discovered that most of the UK's mineral wealth lies in Scottish territory. Some Scots want independance, but by no means all of us. Some want to be in the EU as a recognized independant nation and others believe that our strength (and England's) lies in our unity with the other members of the UK. We don't whine for independance - if enough Scots really wanted it, we would take it. Most Scots are fairly happy with the way things are now, though it is a bit strange. There's the UK parliment in London and the Scottish Parliment in Edinburgh, but no English parliment. That is a bit weird. |

And then there's the annoying chip on the shoulder against the English. Has anyone ever heard them say anything nice about the English? And then there's the cheapness factor but not just Scotland.....and drunkenness-bars with scary bouncers...shall I go on? But if you like golf...And what are they saying?? No really. |

I'm pretty sure David Byrne (Talking Heads) was born in Scotland. I also feel it is my duty to inform you that 'wee Jimmy Krankie' is currently in hospital after falling off a beanstalk during a pantomime. I am aware this sounds like the start of a crap joke but, bizarrely, it's true. |
