| With the wave of America-bashing thought I'd chime in. Canadians seem to really be laying in here, for what reason I don't know. This is a country that allows people on fake passports to enter the country and receive benefits and a country that has to endure the periodic attempt by one of its provinces of defecting. |

You want to be critical of my country? Fine with me.
So, what's your beef with Canada, eh?
Do you want to start (yet another) America vs. Canada thread?
I am Canadian. I have many American friends. I like American culture (mostly). And would kill about now for a Big Mac.
Please don't stoop down to the maturity level of the children you teach and start Canada-bashing.
I have not bashed America for over a year-- and I have no withdrawal symptoms to speak of! |

| I got nothing against Canada either - in fact there are many places there I want to see. I think the underlying feeling is frustration over being bashed so much. However, 2 wrongs don't make a right. |

Actually quite a few countries (including, I am certain, the U.S.) have done this over the years although none have done it intentionally.

I assume you mean Quebec. It's worth noting though that the cause of seperatism is based more on the not-always-cleverly-articulated notions of national soveriegnty on the part of some of the Quebecois then anything that was seriously wrong with the country from which they were trying to seperate. It's also worth noting that they have yet to suceed. Tells you something, doesn't it?
Nobody ever said that Canada was paradise on earth (it's too cold for one thing). On the other hand, I have grave reservations (to say the least) about Dubya's America and this post doesn't offer anything to change my mind. |

1. I have nothing against Canada, but the Canadians who have disparaged the U.S. for no other reason than because it is convenient to do so. I like Canada; watched one the Jets' last games in Winnipeg before they moved to Phoenix.
2. No beef w/Canada. The fact that people can enter w/o proper paperwork is a problem.
3. Another Canada-U.S. bashing? I'm assuming Canada would come out the clear winner, so no, that's not my motivation.
4. Glad the bashing is out of your system.  |

I've been told by students on several occasions that it is harder to get a visa to come to Canada than it is to get one to go to the U.S. People sneaking in illegally (w/o paperwork) is a problem in both countries. Don't pretend it doesn't happen in the U.S. just to make Canada look bad. (i.e. "Don't burn out someone else's candle just to make your own burn brighter.")
I think nationality bashing is wrong, no matter who does the bashing and no matter which country is the target. It's juvenile and ignorant. |

THe biggest problem in Canada (aside from the propensity to elect socialist governments) is the constant and incessant navel gazing. We are so worried about our 'national identity' that we never actually BUILD one. Canada is one huge insecurity complex.
That, and the reflexive anti-Americanism that is prevalent, prevents Canada from growing up and maturing as a nation. The constant comparisons to the States, and the "well, at least I'm not American" trick to end an argument, are both pathetic. |

If you think Cdns bash Americans a lot, what about the Europeans? Wow! It seems that the only people I've ever seen defend America (other than themselves of course  ) are Canadians. I've even defended America once or twice myself, just don't tell anyone eh. Seems we're your only friend, on this forum at least. |

No. I think the biggest problem is the lack of secure fulltime jobs for people with a BA, coupled with industry specific problems (not just in ESL teaching) where even if you spend a year getting training in a field and doing placements thereby meeting people etc. there is a high likelyhood that you will not get a job because positions are filled by volunteers who have highly paid spouces in other fields and therefore do not need to be paid (or in many cases, even to have the training the industry/government puts foward as a minimum requirement, simply because they are volunteers). |

So what? I'd rather have poor paperwork allowing people into a country than be forcing my military onto other countries to go searching for "bad guys". And we can't just wander the streets with guns.

Most people outside the West don't seem to know the difference between Canada and the US. In fact, if you say 'Canada' they will say 'Oh, America!'
Better to just say 'Western' 
As for identities, I'm one of those who believe that Canada and the US have an inseparable culture and destiny. We are not that different. |

Never have we been so different. As Canada allows and supports gay marriage, marijuana, abortion, etc, the US goes far the other way. As we have less and less to do with military and war, the US steps things up. We support the environment and the US does not.
More and more shows like South Park like to put down Canada as do news shows when we dare to disagree. American TV and movies continues to hit all time lows. I have never felt less American as I do now and I'm proud of it. Nonetheless many Americans I've met aren't happy with what their government is doing and why should they be?
My only beefs are the taxes and low immigration rates. We have central heating and hot water so who cares. |
