from BBC Sport
Scotland are now behind Burkina Faso, Syria and United Arab Emirates and are ranked alongside Albania and Guinea
Thank you Scotland, and you Berti, for unselfishly entertaining your southern neighbours |

| The only negative posts in this thread seem to have come from English people. |
But also some very positive & complimentary comments came from English people. Sorry for clouding the issue with facts.
Spinoza's post was not that bizarre and not insulting. Have a read again. He made some valid and intelligent points, which I agree with. Just because Spinoza hasn't professed undying love for Scotland - doesn't mean he hates it.
The thread is about Scotland - we all know that - but we all know that threads go off on tangents. Isn't that the beauty of discussion?

You know full well that is not in the English nature to do so. And I personally don't want to do that. I'm proud of England - but don't feel the desire to ram it down people's throats. Also, it is frowned upon for English people to display nationalistic feelings. If people see a crowd of Union Flags they immediately think extreme right wing politics. That's a price we pay for our imperialistic past.
And thank you for supporting England at sports, when possible. I have never heard a Scotsman ever say that before! But don't say it back in your home country!

[quote="Spinoza"]There's a lot of sentimentality towards Scotland. I suppose it's the same for any 'little' place that's near a 'big' place (big and small do not refer to geographical area in this context). The same goes for the Irish - indeed more so.
I find it desperately tiresome. It's clichd and it's all done just as much by terminally stupid people from the United States as well as the scots and the sole basis for it appears to be Braveheart. Dear oh dear. What peddlers of this rot know about Scotland or the UK could be written on the back of a stamp - and there'd still be plenty of room left for what they know about anything else.
Well I am one of "the Scots". Spinoza didn't say "some Scots" or "a minority of Scots". "The Scots" means all of them. So yes I found that insulting.
On the subject of England carrying Scotland, we are both members of a union. The UK is split into regions and counties, so where do we draw the line about who's supporting who financialy etc.? People from London could complain that they are feeding the people of Yorkshire, but this would be silly. The UK is strong as it is - a whole made up of many parts.
I also dislike comments that paint an entire nation with the same brush. When I hear or read people comment that all English are blah blah and all Scots are nah nah, I wonder how this person has accumulated such indepth knowledge of every citizen of that country.
There seems to be a misconception that the Scots don't want to be part of the union anymore. It isn't true. Scotland is well enough represented in the UK parliment and even better represented in its own parliment. |

So if said, "the Americans are stupid" I would infact be referring only to one or two of them? Er no. I think the "figure of speech" line is highly flawed. Common sense? Common sense would dictate the use of "some" or "one or two" etc.
Anyway, I wasn't badly insulted (just a bit) but thanks for explaining that you didn't mean to be insulting. |
