Quake May Have Made Earth Wobble--US Scientists
Tue Dec 28, 8:20 PM ET Science - Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The deadly Asian earthquake may have permanently accelerated the Earth's rotation -- shortening days by a fraction of a second -- and caused the planet to wobble on its axis, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.
Richard Gross, a geophysicist with NASA (news - web sites)'s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, theorized that a shift of mass toward the Earth's center during the quake on Sunday caused the planet to spin 3 microseconds, or 3 millionths of a second, faster and to tilt about an inch on its axis.
When one huge tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean was forced below the edge of another "it had the effect of making the Earth more compact and spinning faster," Gross said. Gross said changes predicted by his model probably are too minuscule to be detected by a global positioning satellite network that routinely measures changes in Earth's spin, but said the data may reveal a slight wobble.
The Earth's poles travel a circular path that normally varies by about 33 feet, so an added wobble of an inch is unlikely to cause long-term effects, he said. "That continual motion is just used to changing," Gross said. "The rotation is not actually that precise. The Earth does slow down and change its rate of rotation."
When those tiny variations accumulate, planetary scientists must add a "leap second" to the end of a year, something that has not been done in many years, Gross said. Scientists have long theorized that changes on the Earth's surface such as tide and groundwater shifts and weather could affect its spin but they have not had precise measurements to prove it, Caltech seismologist Hiroo Kanamori said.
"Even for a very large event, the effect is very small," Kanamori said. "It's very difficult to change the rotation rate substantially."

When the Great Purification is near, these helpers will shake the earth first for a short time in preparation. After they shake the earth two times more, they will be joined by the True White Brother, who will become one with them and bring the Purification Day to the world. All three will help the "younger brother" (the Hopi and other pure-hearted people) to make a better world. In the prophecies, the two helpers are designated by the Hopi word for "population," as if they were large groups of people.
The Hopi were warned that if these three great beings failed, terrible evil would befall the world and great numbers of people would be killed. However, it was said that they would succeed if enough Hopi remained true to the ancient spirit of their people. The True White Brother and his helpers will show the people of earth a great new life plan that will lead to everlasting life. The earth will become new and beautiful again, with an abundance of life and food. Those who are saved will share everything equally. All races will intermarry and speak one tongue and be a family.....
The Hopi also have prophesied that "Turtle Island could turn over two or three times and the oceans could join hands and meet the sky." This seems to be a prophecy of a "pole shift" -- a flipping, of the planet on its axis. The Hopi call this imminent condition -- and that of society today -- "Koyaanisqatsi", which means "world out of balance...a state of life that calls for another way. POLAR SHIFT???
http://www.viewzone.com/changingpoles.html
It began as a search for Atlantis. But Charles Hapgood's discovery of our shifting planet is perhaps more profound. If his data is correct, we've got to face some unsettling facts about our Earth's past and-- and more importantly-- our future.
The "Shifting Poles Theory" was introduced by History Professor, Charles H. Hapgood, whose fascination with geography and ancient maps led to his re-discovery of the Piri Reis Map. This hand drawn Turkish naval map had been gathering dust since the early 1500's, its significance unrealized. On closer scrutiny, Hapgood observed evidence of spherical trigonometry and a detailed knowledge of global geography-- including the coastline of Antarctica at a remote time, when it was free of ice. The map had been drawn just a few years after Columbus visited the Americas. The cartographer, Admiral Piri Reis, described his world map as having been drawn from "very old" reference maps. It appeared as if some ancient, forgotten civilization had risen to these capabilities, and then had disappeared. The identity of these ancient mariners begged to be discovered.....
Some supportive historical facts were given by Hapgood to support these shifts in continental position and climate:
The presence of ice caps in North America and Northern Europe, highly eccentric compared to the present north pole.
The contemporaneous absence of ice caps from Siberia, which was actually populated to its northernmost regions by an impressive zoological community.
The Arctic Sea was warmer than it is today, and there were human beings living in the New Siberia Islands.
Antarctica was partially free of ice.
The general climatic situation of the Earth was coherent with a different position of the poles.
So, while debate continues on the speed at which the poles have changed, the fact of their shift seems well established. It also appears that the shift will continue, as it likely has for millennia, as part of a cycle we are just now beginning to understand.

>>Subject: [DrRichBoylanReports] Earth Changes predictor events?
Friends,
I would be remiss not to comment on the terrific Quakes
Disaster of recent days.
First, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2004, we were
shocked by the news: "The world's biggest earthquake in
almost four years has struck 800km off the coast of
Tasmania," Australian seismological officials said.
Then, the day after Christmas, the U.S. Geological
Survey reported: "A great earthquake occurred at 00:58:50
(UTC) on Sunday, December 26, 2004. The magnitude 9.0 event
has been located off the west coast of northern Sumatra."
This great quake is depicted as the largest in 40 years.
Having two Great Quakes just two days apart is
astounding. Their positioning, on opposite sides of the
planet (SIC?), suggests a broad event sequence. The second Quake
was so powerful that an Italian geophysicist reported that
it affected the rotation of the Earth.
Is this massive geophysical events-cluster, occurring
just as we get ready to cross over and enter the 2005-2006
event-window foreseen by various experiencers, a foretaste
of things to come? The summary (below) provided by the USGS of events just
in the past seven days may provide a clue.

Where Are All the Dead Animals? Sri Lanka Asks
Wed Dec 29, 4:41 AM ET Science - Reuters
COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.
Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 2 miles inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.
"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters Wednesday.
"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."
At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned.
The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean Sunday, which sent waves up to 15 feet high crashing onto Sri Lanka's southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction. |
