I am coming to Vietnam from Taiwan with a 3G phone. Can I use my phone in Vietnam by putting a Vietnamese SIM card into my Taiwanese phone? If not, are there any other alternatives to use my current phone in Vietnam.
I currently just buy minutes for my phone in Taiwan as I need them. Can I do the same in Vietnam. Thanks in advance for any help you might have to offer. |

No 3G service yet, but you can definitely use your phone with a Vietnamese SIM card. Cards range from $6-$20 (100 000-300 000 dong). Service is relatively cheap though off the top of my head I don't know what per-minute voice charges run. Text messages are about 500 dong a pop. |

The two biggest mobil phone service providers, Mobiphone and Vinaphone, mainly operate through pre-paid cards. As pfroehlich said, the cards run from 100,000 to 300,000 dong.
A 300,000 dong card (for Mobiphone) will give you 60 days of use plus 300,000 dong worth of phone calls. Voice calls go for 3,500 dong per minute or part thereof. Text messages are 500 dong each.
I'm not sure of the charges for the other providers - maybe someone can let us know.
As an aside, it's well worth having a cellphone in VN. Mine has paid for itself many times over just because it makes it easier for schools to contact me for substitute classes and new ones. |
