Hello everyone! Hows it going? Happy new year! I would like to let everyone know that the tiny island Koh Lipe still stands! A remarkable feat considering we were one of the closest thai islands to the quake and i believe the only inhabited island in the Andaman Sea not to have been hurt. Noone died and nothing was damaged!
I'm a teacher here at the Chao Leh school, the morning we awoke with stinking Christmas hangovers to the noise of hysterical locals rushing around. The sea looked like a bath about to overflow...very odd sight....helped the men pull in the boats and all of a sudden we are standing waiste hight in water where seconds before there had been none...the wave here was only 2 meters....some say it was the reef which saved us, others say the 2 small islands infront of us bore most of the brunt...either way it was a very lucky escape....life here on 'lucky lipe' continues as before, and everyone here only knows the suffering from what we see on tv...It is devestating.
Still talk of more to follow but sincerely doubt it. If anyone is unsure of where to go now that Phi Phi is out, come here.
Take care and best of luck. |

Nice to hear that the people on Ko Lipe stayed safe.
I love the colour of the water around Ko Lipe, it was beautiful.
But the beaches looked like a junkies garden - have they cleaned them up at all. It looked really bad. |

The beaches are clean. I'm not sure when you were here. This is my first time and i'v only been here since end november. There are large scale cleaning activities going on every week, with the whole school taking a day off to walk around with big bin liners! haha! and there is a local group of farang who collect the plastic bottles and stuff like that...take it easy! |
