It's very sad that we have several threads here which are debating who should give how much towards the tsunami disaster, criticizing one country for giving less than others, comparing donations (per percentage of national wealth) of one against another etc.
As teachers especially, perhaps we should think along more mature lines such as actually considering doing/contibuting something ourselves to help rather than falling into the trap of childish bickering.
Very sad indeed.

I wholeheartedly agree. Infact I'd go as far as to say it is bizarre. It does seem to give people the chance to bash other countries or their governments and we all now how rare that is on this forum. |

It is indeed truly sad and pathetic that within a few hours of the disaster there were posts criticising the relief effort and ridiculously childish posts started appearing from the usual suspects (you know who you are) comparing aid contributions from countries which did not yet comprehend the full scale of the disaster. 150000 are dead and people think the most important thing is posting anti-bush (and often anti-US) posts...what is wrong with you people? Do you have nothing better to do with your lives than post anonymous messages politicising the worst humanitarian disaster the world has ever seen? You should be ashamed of yourselves. I pity you. |

Is "sad" truly the correct word?
I much prefer other word choices, such as "pathetic" and "disgusting."
At some point people have to get it through their heads that this isn't a comptetition to see who writes the biggest check. Instead, it's about the victims of a tragedy --- a tragedy of the worst kind.
To those who can't shut their traps about who gave (or didn't give), I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is.

Some of you have missed the point that it is important to call attention to LACK OF ATTENTION and meanspiritedness on the part of certain (a certain) world leader(s). A tragedy of this magnitude should bring out the BEST; it has instead shown us, again, the egocentricity of the US government and its choice to isolate itself from the rest of the world.
As a US citizen I find it simply appalling that the US had to be scolded in order for Bush to, very reluctantly, increase the US contribution. |

I haven't posted much at all lately. There is so much endless "USA vs. X" and "Bush sucks a big X" talk that it is just plain boring. |

I see--you have no responsibility to contribute something that ISN'T boring?
Seems to me that if you are going to "participate" in this forum that you should consider writing something for us to respond to--instead of complaining that we aren't entertaining you in the way you would like to be entertained. |

Yes, it should bring out the best in people. Unfortunately, it has brought out the worst in many people who use this forum. If you believe that Bush did not act how you think he should have then did you write to him to say so? Or any other person in power? I doubt it. Instead you highjacked a thread that was started by someone voicing concern for the people in Thailand to force, once again, your political opinions down our throats. Maybe i should point this out: Posting on this forum will not make George Bush change his opinion. Writing to him personally won't either to be honest but it least it'll spare us your invaluable insights into world politics. Please refrain from using this thread for your political propaganda.
You'll notice that your comments on the thread i mentioned were deleted by the moderator. Doesn't that say something to you? |

(i should point out that this post was made in response to yet another repulsively insulting message from a certain poster which was, like many of her posts, deleted by the moderator along with her reply to this post.)
I made a financial donation, the most i could afford and this week i'm attending my friend's funeral where a further contribution to the disaster fund will no doubt be made. Please also refrain from calling me 'boy-o' or any other variation on my online name.

I agree with you guys. It'd be nice to see some compassion in these threads, instead of barbed political comments.

I think the problem really is that our so-called 'elected' leaders decide in our names to make fools or not of us by announcing to the world at large how little they are willing to donate.
Some did a better job but again one wonders whether they were concerned more with the fate of those struck by the tsunami or what PR effect their trumpeting of their donations would have.
The U.S.A. certainly has been in a twilight from the start, apparently still smarting from the blows it received from the world at large for its selfish handling of the Iraq crisis; now at least they are in a hard competition with the Chinese and the E.U.
I would be willing to donate clothes and a little dough, but I don't know where in Guangzhou I can do that. |

Roger, look here:

There several links to charitable organizations that would gladly accept your financial contribution. Others have been posted on this forum, in other threads.
