Overall it was a disappointing year for music, however, there was the odd gem to keep us all going.

My top 5 would read as follows:

1. Rachel Stevens - Some Girls: Please bear in mind that I am not gay; I just completely love this song. I really feel that this is what pop music should be all about and, when done correctly, pop is the greatest genre: one that everyone can enjoy without the need to sub categorise or intellectualise. This song has such a catchy hook and excellent production values. It may sound like something from 15-20 years back but that is no bad thing and it certainly doesn't sound like anything else around today. Apart from, possibly, Girls Aloud which is, again, no bad thing. I really sound gay, don't I?

2. Dizzee Rascal - Stand Up Tall: The sound of London in 2004. I just cannot stop saying good things about Dizzee. Boy in Da Corner was the album of 2003 and Showtime is clearly album of 2004. Dizzee may not be the greatest MC in the world but his charisma and brutal truth and energy shine through to make him sound how Chuck D would if he were 19 and had been raised on a council estate in Bow. Stand Up Tall is, for me, the standout track on an outstanding album and the tune that should break Dizzee in America. It has so much energy, the tempo is right: this is REAL garage punk.

3. Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out: A true Indie dancefloor classic for years and years to come. A decent album as well but this song has received saturation coverage on mainstream radio and XFM ever since it came out. The jaunty guitars are just right and the tempo has lent the song well to the various remixes floating around. Infectious, anthemic, classic.

4. Lil John & The Eastside Boyz: Get Low - Think this may have been a re-release for 2004, however, it matters little. Whatever year this was released in it wouldn't matter; this is one of those songs that will sound fresh and get people moving at any time of day in any year. Proof, if proof be need be that the future of US hip hop lies in the dirty south of the country with artists like Lil John, David Banner, Bonecrusher, T.I and, of course, Outkast. Chris Rock's favourite hip hop tune of recent years and that should be good enough for all of you.

5. Libertines - Can't stand me now: The crashing sound of the end of the greatest band Britain has produced since Oasis (first 2 albums anyway). Take a Libertines album (first one anyway), listen to it, listen to it again and then go out on the streets looking for Keane, Coldplay and all the other fucking wet, shoegazing, MOR, Virgin Radio approved, keep-you-dosed-up-so-the-aliens-can-take-over-without-you-noticing bands around and torture them. Torture them badly. The libertines were so fucking great that they simply could not have lasted and this song documents the reason why; the fractious relationship between the two leaders of the band, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. A love story between two friends; we have possibly all been there and we all know the way it ends: with one of them addicted to crack and breaking into the other one's house, nicking all his stuff, getting sent to prison, coming out of prison, reforming the band, getting kicked out of the band, getting sent to Thailand by Dot Cotton out of Eastenders and them forming a new band. I remember that summer like it was yesterday and, Steve, if you're reading, I'm ready to reform Matty and the Jets.....

I don't have much access to new music out here... Crying or Very sad

I don't think I heard a single new song in 2004. Doesn't matter, though, because I am stuck in an '80s/early '90s rut in terms of my musical taste.

Being stuck in China with the Carpenters and the back passage boys it's easy to lose track of the good stuff coming out of the U.K.
I've been listening to a lot of Franz Ferdinand and Libertines online though.

Favourite song? This Love by Maroon 5 was just the perfect song to wake up to in the morning and make you feel good about the summer approaching.
However, I'd have to go with Blinded by the lights by The Streets.
