Um, Hellen Keller was born in Alabama to a Civil War veteran father.

What's wrong with Bob Dylan?

Good idea for a post. I am not a fan of Bush 'the strategically shaven baboon' Jnr., but all this anti-American talk is totally unfair, out of control and getting rather tiresome.

My favourite Americans:

Raymond Chandler - author & creator of Philip Marlowe - brilliant crime fiction stories
John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac, Joseph Heller - all great writers
Iggy Pop - pint-sized drug-crazed music god
Ramones - all of them and their vast range of chords
Lou Reed - before his head went up his ar*e
David Lynch - well weird film director ("Jimmy Stewart from Mars" as Mel Brooks called him)

There's a lot more, as it's a big country - but that'll do for now.

Well, I own up to a little gap in my encyclopedic knowledge. Is it a crime not to know where Helen Keller was born? But yes, mea culpa, and my apologies!

Homer,
This is a fine list but I wonder if Aquaman is really an American. He was born in Atlantis by Atlantean parents and spends most of his time in international waters. Unless he has naturalized, I think that he's not an American.
I might be mistaken.

I'd like to mention John Chapman, otherwise known as "Johnny Appleseed". Someone who actually DID something rather than simply talking about it. A real person.
But, since he has become mythologised, might we also mention other American mythological figures who have in times past fired the imaginations of American schoolchildren:
Paul Bunyan
Pecos Bill
Davy Crockett (real, but mythologised)
Casey Jones
John Henry
(not to mention Jesse James)
And on and on.
The mythology is as important in attempting to discern national character as real people, IMHO.

Lionel Hutz. I mean Phil Hartman. The genius:

Prosecutor: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. Who do you find more attractive. Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson?
Judge: What is the point of all this?
Prosecutor: Your Honor, I'm so confident of Marge Simpson's guilt, that I can waste the court's time rating the superhunks.
Hutz: Ooohh. He's gonna' win.
Marge: Mr. Hutz!
